Dave would it be possible to to add a search box to this area, one that will search for species by name?
Right now we can make a search for species by using the generic 'Database' search box. It would be helpful to be able to do both from the Sempervivum Database page.
I've often thought we needed a "Search this database" engine that would search just the database you're currently in, but I don't think the search should be limited to species. We already have one search limited to cultivar names. It wouldn't be long before someone needed a search trade name, or series or other fields.
No, I didn't mean to limit it to searching a species.
At this time I can't search for a species from the Sempervivum database. We can only search for Cultivars from the Sempervivum database.
It would be great if we could search both cultivars and species from the same page (in the Sempervivum datase).
And right now if I do a search within the Sempervivum datbase it will only bring up sempervivum, no other plants with the same cultivar name. I love that feature.
That is why I thought it would be wonderful to be able to also search for species within this genus database.
We used to be able to search for Series within the Sempervivum database, in the Search by characteristics. It had the field for Series. We had so much fun finding all entries in a series using it. But that field disappeared from the search fields.
Series was moved out of the data box fields and into the main plant name field and is now searchable by text. So you can do a text search for something like, "Sempervivum SeriesName" and it'll find all sempervivums with that SeriesName. I'll also have a better "Search this custom database" feature soon and then you can more conveniently search series again.
I have updated the custom database area and you can now search the databases!
I replaced the "Search by cultivar name" engine with a "Search the Apples Database" (or whatever database you're in). Just like the database search, this one searches all fields but is restricted to whatever database you're in when you invoke the search. I tested it and it seems to work pretty well.
I just don't begin to know what to say Dave. It is like Christmas came early.
I actually feel teary when I think about all you do for us.
This new ability goes beyond the term 'Magic Man'.
FYI: The autocomplete functionality has been restored to that search. It now still searches all the fields, and additionally it does the autocomplete pulldown like it used to do. The best of both worlds!
