Such a fun article! But I'm really surprised that there are no petunias in the list! Doesn't everyone love petunias?

I, too, was expecting to see petunias and was surprised that they didn't make the list!

This was really interesting to see. There are plants included in the list that surprised me and others that I would have thought would be there that are missing. Great information!

I love this list! Great "study material" for a new gardener!

I missed noting it when I saw it & someone may fuss at me for saying this in the wrong place but I saw a beautiful banner you did @newyorkrita and I wanted to remember to compliment it! I saw a small photo I thought & then there it was. I'd wondered what a banner was...

Yay, petunias, especially the wild traily ones...interfoglia? Nothing like that bright magenta color pop.

The way it currently works is, when I'm going to make an article I run a report like this:

Find all the plants that meet a certain criteria, like in this instance for example, they have "Annuals" selected. Now you have your pile of plants. Then for each of those plants, count up how many individual members posted a photo or comment to each plant. Then sort by how many you found and there's your popularity contest results.

I figure the more people photograph and comment about a plant, the more popular (or the more grown) the plant is.

So, apparently not a lot of people are photographing and talking about petunias yet in our database.

Could it be because there are so many different varieties?

I just realized, one year later, *Blush* that petunias weren't represented among the top 25 annuals because petunias are perennials.

Zuzu, I think in most gardens they are grown as annuals. nodding

Right, but that doesn't make them annuals.

You have given me a good excuse for taking a whole year to realize this, however.

They are annuals here as they freeze to death each winter.

That only makes them perennials that you've grown outside of their hardiness zone, Rita. The biological differences between annuals and perennials have nothing to do with zone hardiness.

Smack! *Blush* I knew they were perennials. I had a pot of them growing on my back porch for about 4 years. I have no excuse. Rolling my eyes.

I have carried baskets of petunias through the winter, indoors.
Yes, they are definitely perennials. Although most of us, up north, grow them as annuals.
