Does anyone grow Heuchera from seed?
How did you do it and what was the result?
I have just sowed "Melting Fire" seeds and have them under lights.
Also had an old packet of hybrids and trying them under lights too.

I've WSed seeds before. They seem to be very eradict sprouting. Some were close to the mother plant, some closely resembles it, and some turn out quite interesting. Many hybrids are sterile I believe.
I've had one turn out with almost bronze leaves, I just love it. It came from palace purple probably. Hopefully I'll propogate a few this spring. :o)

Duane,
Can you post some pictures of your seed heuchera? Sounds interesting. Caroline, I planted seeds a few years ago. Just collected seed from many of my plants. They were just bee pollinated and I didn't keep track of the parent. Hard to get all the chaff out of the seeds so I just sprinkled all in a seed flat. Then covered with a plastic cover to keep moisture in. Really didn't think they would sprout.
Here is what grew

This is after spending a few hours pulling seedlings, potting to four inch and growing on all summer. I had so many!!!
I planted these on a hillside.
They sprouted in about a week to ten days. Seemed very easy, good luck Caroline and keep use posted on what happens.

Edited because I posted pictures before, sorry. Here's the link:

I don't think I have a pic of my seedlings. I'll try to remember take some this spring/summer.
I get volunteers pretty regularly. Do you get them, Julia?

Yes, I sure do. Some are interesting some not so much. They sure seem to be more hardy then some of the hybrids. The ones on the hillside have never had rust, this will be the 3rd year for them. I didn't get to dead head all the hillside so may have a bunch of little ones this spring.

Wow Julia they look great, most of the ones I got from seed look like Mocha and Bronze wave. I just sow them in a back corner of the garden. I have some Firefly seeds to try this Spring.

Yes, we have short summers here. I have a few Heucheras in my garden. They are young and are not fully grown yet. They start growth in the middle of May and go on most of the time through September. Heucheras are new here and I have bought the plants that I have, but have never seen any Heuchera seeds here. The vinters rather mild with long spells above 32°F but sometimes goes down to 14°F and rarely below 5°F.

Here below are about all my Heucheras: Green Grin!

Those are nice plants and a good variety.
They do not always survive our winters.
Should mulch them in fall, I guess.

I bought my first plants in 2011 and they survived the mild winter here with leaves and all, so I thought maybe they are ever"green". The 5th photo from above was taken in mid may 2012 when usually very little new growth has appeared. There are some dead leaves around the plant but the center of the plant is mostly from the year before. There is even a little ice visible on the plant. But this must be an exception Big Grin I got a couple of new plants last summer and I hope they will be ok.

Those are really beautiful plants. Loved everyone of your pictures. I do see a few bloom stalks on your plants. Maybe this summer you could save seeds from yours. Very easy, I just put an old sheer nylon over the dead blooms. Then when it gets really dry I cut it off. The seeds are small and you will have chaff left in with the seed but that's ok. You could sow them in the house in Feb of March.

Thanks so much, and thank you Julia for the advice on seed saving. I didn´t save much seed last year, we had a really wet summer and fall. Green Grin! I hope I will be able to save some seeds from the Heucheras this year.

@springcolor ......

Do you have to sow the seeds in the house ? What if your house is on the cold, or very cold, side ?

Smiles,
Lyn
