I ordered a dozen plants from ChilePlants.com - that is their minimum order. I'll have some to share if anyone is interested. I have grown these chiles for 3 years, same plants just keep producing like mad. I wanted them in a different area and finally decided it would be much easier to just plant new ones than try to move the established plants.

I had one I brought with me to this house and in the haste of moving and trying to bring as many plants as possible with me I popped it out of the ground and stuck it in a 5 gallon pot and had it sitting like that without tamping the soil down in the pot for about 6 months before I stuck it in its permanent home. Not the ideal way to transplant but the plant is now over 5' tall and going on its 5th year in its current location.

I couldn't even get a shovel in last time I tried, although that was before all the rain. Anyway, already ordered, want one or two?

No thanks. I did the same thing you did from the same company. I saw they had a couple chiltepins I liked and then found you need to order a dozen.

I have 7 different varieties started and under lights plus I'm going to start some Bird's Eye seeds this weekend.

Not sure where I'm going to put them all.

Dan, I've seen ads on Craig's list for folks selling seed starts. I think you should augment your day job with these plants. Who knows, it could become your new day job!

Mary, do the ones you ordered have round chiles or the little pointy ones? I'd love one or two if you still have them by swap time. I do agree that this is about the most forgiving plant when it comes to moving that I've ever known. I moved one about 5 or 6 times and it just kept on going.

Chiltpins are small, round peppers. Usually dried. Mexican restaurants offer them in small bowls with menudo.

The pointy head ones are Bird's Eye.

Mary, I have no doubt yours is a chiltepin, too. In all my reading and viewing photos of these peppers for a few years (since I planted the first one), I've seen both round and pointy ones. No need to second guess.

Too much shade, I think. The original plant was in full sun and was a beauty. I never figured out why, because these little bombs are so hot, the birds love 'em! Makes gardening fun when each person thinkis they are talking about completely different plants yet they think they are talking about the same one.

The best producing one I have is up against my back wall that faces west so it doesnt get any sun after noon.
Except the very top. Its probably a good 5.5' tall now.

The thrashers are horrible with ours and eating the ripe chiltepins.
I'm trying to teach Lily (our youngest dog) that thrashers are bad.
I heard or read someplace that birds dont have the nerve sensors that register heat so it doesnt affect them.

Now thats funny.
