bought or not bought a daylily because of the name? My dog's name is Buddy and I just purchased Buddy's Wild And Wonderful on the LA. He IS wild and wonderful! I have WAR EAGLE for me, and ROLL TIDE(boo hiss) for my husband. There is something about Grapefruit Guts that just appeals to my offbeat sense of humor.
No offense to the hybridizer but I just can't have a Streetwalker in my garden. Sticking tongue out

Absolutely! Unfortunately, Wolf Eyes has not come back yet this year, so I fear it did not survive the winter. I also bought Lone Wolf. Both were bought strictly because my mother's maiden name is Wolf.

I have bought daylilies because I enjoy their names, such as one of my favorites: God's Gift To Warthogs

Haven't bought any because their name matches a family name, yet. But I have a few that are garden named and will possibly be registered that I named after family members.

I did buy Larry's Obsession because my husband's name is Larry but I also bought it because I thought it is gorgeous. I didn't buy daylilies after my kids, I registered my own and named them after my kids - Rebekah's Gothic Spider and Sarah's True Colors. Now I think I need to buy one named after myself. Maybe Cindy's Tie Dye would do.

I bought "Carol Jean" not only for myself, but some for my Father and sisters because it was my Mother's name.

I bought "Red Flat Fred" partly for the hybridizer, but also because my husband's name is Fred. It has turned out to be one of my favorite daylilies.

At one time, I was collecting plants with "family names", but only still have a couple of them. It was a fun idea, but I found that most of names were nicer than the plants. These days the plant has to impress me first.

I did buy "Pawprints On My Heart" last year after losing our pet. The plant description grabbed me and then the name closed the deal. ;)

Hybridizers description :

Lavender cream bi-color spider with chevron patterned eye and green throat
Several scapes in 2010 had over 55 buds. Has the highest bud count of any daylily I have ever grown. Passes on branching
and bud count and early bloom to its offspring. Fertile both ways. Vigorous----fast increaser. .Makes small-medium size plants. Has been tested in Zone 4. Choice! I can't say enough about this one.
Dedicated to all those wonderful pets that touch our hearts.
Can be used to breed earlies,bi-colors,spiders/UFO's,patterns or just to enhance bud count and branching.

Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Sarah's True Colors')

that is a pretty flower. I usually do not pastels or lighter colors but this one is nice!

I have not purchased any dl for their names alone, but I would not buy a dl if it had a name I thought was offensive. That or I would just refer to it as something else.
I have not seen very many though that I recall had names I thought were repulsive Smiling

@Kim My favoritest(my own word) cat of all time was a tuxedo, her name was Socks but I called her TickiSox. I have a weakness for tuxedos and calicos. And I had to LOL at your mom! Big Grin
@Pat @ Natalie I forgot I had Fire Arrow for my passed away Golden Retriever. He was red and well, his name was Arrow!
@Kathy alright I'm getting sniffly about your lost pet. What a great daylily name to remember him or her.

"Pawprints On My Heart" how lovely!! Must have.

"Riot on a kindergarten bus" is hard to go by.

But a name never influences my choice. I have a heart of stone there (ignore the pawprint comment).
The problem is that when you are young your life it is ruined by your parents. When you are older it is ruined by your children.

Absolutely!!!

Bought " one smiling dude" and "big sexy" for my husband Lovey dubby And then one day when when he wasn't so nice, I bought "mean as a snake". Rolling on the floor laughing I have all three planted together and call it his garden even though he would rather be inside watching sports.

.
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Mean as a Snake')

My 14 yr old daughter went to AHS database and typed her name in to find "Anam Cara"
Her name is Cara and she is an AHS member, shows daylilies and attends regionals with me. Anam Cara means soul friend (soul mate) in Celtic.

Edited to add, some may arrive because of the name but they stay because of the flower/plant

Glen - I, too, like the name Riot on the Kindergarten Bus! That name is so funny and the blooms do remind me of a bunch of rambunctious 5 and 6 year olds!

I want to pick out and register some of my NOIDs for those who are special to me ... be they alive or deceased!

Lisa - I laughed out loud at your garden area for you hubby! That is soooo funny!!! Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

Kim - I can't believe you've managed to find so many with names that suit your family of animals ... and people! LOL about Driving Miss Daisy!

"Pawprints On My Heart" .... I do like that name!

@beckygardener Becky, if your NOID plants aren't ones that you hybridized, or you didn't buy them as seedlings, you really shouldn't register them, since they are probably already registered.

Lisa, Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing That is hilarious!!!

My plan is to name a few daylilies after pets and family members. I haven't even looked for ones that are suitably named for any of them, but I'm sure there must be some. I think I just want to name my own in their honor.

Other than Wild Horses, which was coming home with me even if it was ugly, I can't think of a daylily that I bought only because of the name. The names usually grab my attention first though. If I think the name is ugly, I usually don't look for pictures! If I think the name is funny, I always look for pictures. I think I've bought a few that I may not have otherwise, because I liked the name, and the bloom was "good enough"!

Natalie - All my daylilies are NOIDS because they were all grown from seeds. I don't have any that I received as a plant. Not one. Unfortunately, I was unable to keep track of their parentage when I sowed and grew my oldest plants. So they really are genuine NOIDS .... no id possible. But the new seedlings I'm growing now .... I'm doing my best to keep them labeled so that I will have the names of their individual parentage to add during the registration process. It's going to be awhile though before I have some that I feel are worthy of registering. I'm mainly doing that in memory of or in honor of a loved one. And of course, I will share some of my fans with family members so that someone always has them. I plan to use them as gifts too. I bet most people would be thrilled to receive a hybrid plant named after them! It would be an affordable, but very personalized gift! You see, I have a method to my madness .... Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious!

My sister would like the one named Wild Horses. She has had horses all her life. She is probably a little like you, Natalie. Thumbs up

Becky, those aren't NOID's then. They are seedlings. Big difference! It doesn't matter if you know the parentage or not. It's nice to know, but it certainly isn't a requirement! You can still register your early ones too.
