Name: Alma Phoenix & Cottonwood, AZ USDA zone 9b, Sunset 13 & ??
I bought two of these sages (can't remember which) several years ago and apparently, I've been a very bad mommy to them. They are all legs and arms with a lot of dead wood, mostly underneath. And they don't bloom as they should. Nothing at all this year. Maybe too soon? Anyhow, what do you all with sages recommend? Should I cut them back severely and hope they grow out in tighter form? Or trim but not too much? They look terrible as they are.

In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. – Thomas Jefferson
I wouldn't fertilize, they come back really well on their own. Fertilizer might be too much. Dunno, though, I've never fertilized. In fact, the ones that I've cut way back, I don't even water.
