I've had this ginger for a couple of years and it's never bloomed...I know....Bloom would be helpful with ID.

Last year I grew it where it go morning sun/ midday shade/ very very late afternoon sun.

I'm trying to figure out what it is so I can put it where it will be happy enough to bloom.

Maybe Anne, I have the plain green form, I'll compare the leaves as they are popping up now .

When I saw the picture and was looking at how the leaves are appearing Zingiber popped up in my mind as it certainly wasn't hedychium, costus or curcuma.

That is Zingiber zerumbet 'Darceyi', Variegated Shampoo Ginger.

Dave, Thanks !! I'll add this pic for now, then when it's bigger I'll add more. Hopefully I get blooms this year. I've got it where it get's morning sun, then high bright shade then a little late afternoon sun also. One reason I hadn't put it in the ground cause I wasn't sure of the id and wanted to get the needed growing conditions info.
I like that it's a smaller grower than it's solid color kin.

The season for Shampoo Ginger is just starting here. The wild Hawaiian 'Awapuhi does spread fairly quick in forest understory and is somewhat aggressive in a garden (although it is a pleasant amenity to massage into hair after showering).
I have a patch of the 'Darceyi' cultivar and it has pretty much stayed where I put it since 1997. It's easy to take care of and provides the conditioning gel just as well as the wild plant!

When the patch matures I'll get some photos and add them to the database as well.
