I had a look into the database and think there are photos of different clones;
Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum 'Flamingo')

one is smooth:

another is velvety:

in germany we only know the smooth one - the colour is from a dark violet to pink;

the mother of 'Flamingo' is S. tectorum 'Atroviolaceum'
Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum tectorum 'Atroviolaceum')

so I think it has to be smooth and dark in spring....the velvety one gets green to autumn - never seen at 'Flamingo'

Here is a Flamingo http://www.sequimrareplants.co...

Here is a description of Flamingo on the Fernwood site. http://www.fernwood-nursery.co...

Another photo: http://www.sedumphotos.net/v/s...

http://mendlenursery.co.uk/ind...

Julia's photo sure looks like an offspring of Atrroviolaceum.

From what I am finding, the fuzzy one is not Flamingo.

@JungleShadows. Lets see if Kevin knows this semp.

Rolling on the floor laughing Its not even a roller...that's what I get for planting when I was too tired Rolling on the floor laughing I just hope I don't have 2 labels mixed up...oh well, I know in time the mystery will be solved! @springcolor I can't tell from your photos but is your semp smooth?

Great photo Spring!! Thanks...mine are the same color as yours, I think I gave you the larger chicks and kept the smaller ones, so currently they look different, but I do think I have mine labelled right - whew! Blinking

Hello all! I believe I am the source for all of the Flamingo chicks. I don't remember where I purchase the semp but I will look through my records. So, I think I shared with Chris, Lynn, Greg and Julia. Double check your trade list. I guess we should all mark it as a NOID. Sorry!! *Blush*

Okay the entry in the database for S. 'Flamingo' is cleaned up. Take a look and see what you think Peter. Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum 'Flamingo')

Thank you all for working through this. Just know we may have others that are not correct. It is a great help when we all work together. Hurray!

I have purchased, from 3 different nurseries, 3 different semps that have turned out to have been incorrectly ID'ed. Shrug!
What's a person to do?...carry a laptop and double check with a German website while standing in line at the cashier and verify cultivar name, color, and form of semp before paying for it? Blinking Confused

I have my NOID "area" so Patty that is what I do...Bev, I think it comes with the territory, until groups like Peter's and ours get this cleaned up, and even then, its so easy for a company to grow them from seed, in which case they're no longer the original plant anyway!! Thumbs down Rolling on the floor laughing Crazy making! Whistling
