Historic Greenwich and the Royal Park (Part 1)

By NEILMUIR1
June 19, 2010

Greenwich has more history than most people could research in their lifetime. From stone age tools found in Greenwich, the Romans in AD43, the Saxons settlement in the 10th century, to the Danes who in 1011 kidnapped Archbishop Alfege for a ransom, it is an amazing place. When the ransom was not paid, he was murdered and St. Alfege's Church stands in Greenwich to this day! Many of the things in Greenwich the tourists don't see, as they simply don't know about them.

Neil, I think this was the most beautiful tour yet!! You think they can't get any better but they really do. The Chestnut trees are absolutely wonderful and to imagine 400 years old. That is fabulous.
thank you for a wonderful, I know I will never see it but you sure do help me see it thru your eyes. Thank you.

I agree with Charleen, this is my favorite one as well. I think it is because you designed it even though they have taken your name away. BTW that is the total pits and I for one would not be happy with it.....You deserve more respect than that.

It is very beautiful though. Anxiously awating part 2

It does with Neil!!! It is terribly hard to try to figure out why Higer Authorities do hat the do. I'm sure they gave Neil some silly reason but If he created it his name should go on it. People who know him knows the truth, so maybe that will help. We love you Neil.

Exellent article Neil: I'm ashamed to admit to living in London for 25 years and have never been to Greenwich. I really must pay a visit.

Dear Richard, maybe we could meet up for a pint? I know a few good pubs in Greenwich although read Article 2 about Greenwich before thinking about it! I have written Sixteen Articles now, sometimes I put Botanical names on and sometimes I don't. I spend a lot of time on photography and like to keep the text fairly short as I like to think most people know what they are. If it was Kew it would be different! They don't have names in Greenwich, although at 183 Acres it is not as big as Kew, or is it, I can't remember. I tell you one thing watch the hills they are a killer at Greenwich!
Regards.
Neil.
p.s Royal Parks joke at wheelchair access, you would need F1 brakes on these hills!

Yes my son, Neil did do the Titanic garden at Greenwich but things are moving on all the time and soon we will have the Olympics which are going to put the equestrian events in Greenwich Park which to me is sacrilege. A lot of the wonderful chestnut trees will have to be cut down to make room for these events and us "locals" don't like that idea at all !!! eileen
I do hope you enjoy these as much as I have making them.
Eileen.

Why can't they go around them?? I love those trees, they are magnificent. I wouldn't like it either.
Why are they taking his name off the signs Eileen? Just for the changes that is happening?

Dear Charleen, I will answer this if you do not mind. Money is the answer, for they could use Blackheath common which is at the top of the Park. But that does not have the Prestige of a Royal Park!
I love Horses as you know, but the people involved love money, not Horses, trees or anything else, apart from money. They do not live here, they live in Surrey , Berkshire or Hampshire not around here.
Someone has to pay for their big houses and their children's education, so they take it out on us and a Park that has been there since 1433!
The Queen has no say on this matter, as she must always be non political at all times. The politicians and the lawyers are making money out of a two week event.
So instead of getting a crane to lift things over the top of the 400+ year old trees, it is cheaper to cut them down and throw them away!
Thousands of people have signed the petitions to stop this, but we cannot fight against money, the most evil force in the world.
Don't forget someone once said that "Lawyers are someone who fight for your estate, and when they win, they keep it for themselves." That is very true.
We have loads of countryside they could use, but due to the TV and yet again the money involved why use that, when the Olympic Park is just across the River from Greenwich.
As for the sign. When I did the original Garden it was around the corner, which is now a massive hole being filled full of cement! So they attempted to move it but were stopped as they needed the space to bring trucks, cement lorries in etc. So only a bit was moved and the original plaque, was too big to put on a stand for the little bit that is now left. So they had a new smaller one made on a stand, but no one put my name on it, as I had left Greenwich years before. I am glad my name is not on it, as I think it is disgusting what they are doing, no it is a National Disgrace.
The people who are doing this should have their bank accounts stripped, then taken down the Royal steps. From there to the Tower of London and to execution, that is how strongly we feel about this!
See Part 2 Charleen when I put it on.
Kindest Regards.
Neil & Sarah.
p.s. Give Charley a hug from me!

Dear Neil & Sarah, who I hope is getting stronger everyday. Thank you. It is politics which I do know a little about. We are going thru our own Political times ourself. Money rules out over Common sense, there is very little of that any more, anywhere. So sorry about the lovely Chestnut trees, this was my first sighting of them and they are so beautiful. maybe they can be salvaged and made into something worth while, but alas I am afraid that is not how it goes. thank you Neil for answering all my questions.
blessing to you both.

Dear Cherie & Charleen, we are so used to all the things we work so hard for being taken off us now. We invented the steam engine and had the best Railway system in the world. Then the Government nationalized it and told us we all owned a bit, then they sold it off to the French and the Germans! Same with water companies etc. and almost anything someone could make money out of!
There is a lot of money in the Olympics and so they all want a bit of it. We were told that it would pay for itself, which hasn't worked so they put tax up to pay for it, yet 98 % of Londoners don't want it here. It will make it difficult for everyone to get to work as everything is going to be clogged up, the prices will all go up and will not come back down, so we do not want it. The only people who want it are the politicians who can sit in their private clubs with a large Brandy, counting how much money they have made!
Regards.
Neil.

This is so sad, Neil and there is nothing that can be done. Votes don't count from us little people.

I am not a sports fan, although the horses are a joy to watch, but not at the expense of 400 year old trees! As you said, it's all about money.

I read a news article about the soccer games and the great stadium in S. Africa. It stated that the multimillion dollar stadium was built next to the slums; people starving and people over indulging all within a few feet. Where are people's minds going?

Please take a lot of pictures before they start so at least there is a remembrance of them.

Sad, so sad,

Nancy
