Went looking to get lumber for yet another raised bed and of course looked at/for daylilies to see what the might have.
Found 11 plants as marked-down $5.00 each. Custard Candy.
Of the 11 I found 3 that were real nice double fans. Of course I got a cart...
I'd say that they were in great shape, with no yellowing at all. I'll plant them next week ( new bed ).

I got some daylilies years ago at Home Depot (similar to Lowes) and they are still going great guns.

Hope they grow well.

What has been your experience getting the right cultivar from the box stores? Many of my friends find that with irises, they get about 50% right.

I guess you would have to make sure you bought them when they were in bloom. I know we have had a lot of discussions on here about big box stores and why not to buy from them, mostly because the daylilies are more than likely tissue cultured. I do see a lot of homes in my area growing daylilies which they more than likely got from Lowes or Home Depot and they seem to be doing well.

I have purchased stellas from walmart and they did fine for me. I have noticed that Lowes frequently has things mislabled. Best to buy when in bloom to assure you get what you want. I have had good luck with daffodills prepackaged in the fall being true to name and they always grow for me and bloom the following spring.

After I saw Lowes selling daylilies with active rust - this was about 5 years ago- reported it to their manager, told them the plants had an active disease that shouldn't be spread, and asked that they remove the plants from their shelves and they did NOTHING, I wouldn't touch a Daylily from there with a 10 foot pole if they were giving them away!!!

I have been buying from Lily Auction for years and will continue to do so.

I got a couple of box store daylilies back in the early 90's, before daylily rust was a problem. They're still going strong.

Then when the daylily bug got me this year, before I knew about Lily Auction, etc., I bought some (American brand) in packages from Walmart.
NONE of them have been what was on the package.

Conclusion now is, I will never buy daylilies from box stores again.

I don't mind no id daylilies if it was a cheap clearance one and they don't give me a yellow one.

The ones in the little plastic bags during the spring and summer are almost always mislabeled. daffs are the only thing I have had good luck with, maybe tulips-I don't buy those so I don't know. But the fall bulbs seem ok.

Floota-rust isn't a problem in many parts of the county-our cold winters keep it under control here. I can see where in warmer states it would be risky to buy dl from not so reputable sources.

Today I bought a Midnight Marvel Hibiscus at Walmart for $8! It had huge deep red blooms on it and purple foliage!

You can get some nice ones at the big box stores, but if the daylily is not blooming you cannot be sure that you are getting the correct one.

When I first started I bought several daylilies at one of them (can't remember which one at this point). All were true to name except Orange Flurry.

I bought what I thought was (and labeled as) Little Business from one of the Big Box Stores and it turned out to be Crimson Pirate....

If you really did get Custard Candy you will have plenty. It grows and multiplies like a weed for me and blooms like crazy in zone 6b. I too have had problems with getting the wrong plants at the big chain stores. I never buy Dayliles from them anymore.

Sometimes they're correct, sometimes not. Most of the daylily plants sold at the big box stores like Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart, etc, come from places like this

Hundreds of acres of plants growing and propagating in Central America where there is virtually no winter. They sell plants by the thousands to wholesalers, who in turn, service the garden stores.

Log onto their site, and download the list of daylily cultivars available. It's interesting information.

I couldn't get the daylily download, John, but one of their associate links lists Lantana at 13 cents each and I've been pulling it out here on the farm to get rid of it (toxic to livestock).

I pulled up the list, 85 cent per plant was the highest price I saw, the lowest was about 40-45 cents per plant. Of course I don't need two hundred of the same plant. The amazing thing to me was that 55-65 degrees F was considered perfect for daylilies, I never realized they were such cool weather plants.
The available quantities were pretty amazing also, 100,000 Stellas, 50,000 Aztec Gold I think it was.

Yes, it's a huge operation, and you can bet their labor costs are a fraction of ours in the US. One of the big stores in The Villages, gets their daylily plants from a wholesaler in nearby Eustis, and you can bet that he gets his from places like that website. It could be the only source, but I rather doubt it.
