Where did the Summer go? Here we are looking at September already!!!
But, the good thing is that lots of Orchids bloom in the Fall!!
Let me start the month with a couple of happy bloomers-
I took some pictures in the cage and had to take some inside to avoid badly wiggled blooms.
I use this Rajasthani fellow often when taking Orchid pictures, this cute wig of Angraecum distichum is most becoming?

I noticed the Pelatantheria insectifera starting to bloom

and Ascocentrum christensonianum has two small spikes

Neostylis Fuchs Ocean Spray smells just like Violets, so pretty.


There is a bunch of other stuff still going on in the cage:
Encyclia (and all it's other names) cochleata blooms year around

Phragmipedium Sorcerer's Apprentice

Dendrobium bigibbum v compactum puts on a nice show

And David Sander looks still fine

And - there is the Encyclia / other names brassavolae, it started blooming in August and will surely continue into the middle of Fall. The blooms are strongly scented in the evening, imagine the scent of Carnations.

Nice start to the new thread, Ursula, and if you're still looking for summer, look no further than Florida. We're still frying eggs on the driveway.

I have to ask, what is the name of the sitar player with the funky hair? He looks a bit like Ravi Shankar. The Angraecum does suit him nicely. I'm especially fond of the Pelatantheria and its cute blooms but David Sander still steals the prize.

Out in the OC, some of the big cane NOID Dendrobiums are firing up. These plants grow up near the ceiling in full sun and take up tons of space. Not a nice fit for many of us.


I'm showing these dancing ladies mainly to illistrate flower thrip damage. Look at the edge of the blooms and you will see their work. You will find them working on light colored flowers (white and yellow) more often than the dark reds. Malathion or Diazinon work well to control these critters.


Here is another of the big NOID cane Dendrobiums just coming into bloom.


My Brassavola nodosa has been putting out a single bloom, one after the other, for months. Brassavolas are so happy when mounted on a piece of wood.


Bc. Jacqui, another nodosa type, has but one flower as well. This one is mounted on a small piece of cedar.

Jim, when you say that your Den. gets full sun, do you literally mean "Full Sun", as in sun from 7:00AM till 7:00 PM? My big ole Den. with 4' canes gets nothing but dappled sun (its hanging under a large oak). Our sun would basically fry the vast majority of my tropical plants (highs in the mid-90's every day with our heat-index of 105-110.

It hangs at the top of the OC. That means it is protected by the polycarb roof (20%) and the aluminet (50%).

OK, nowhere near full sun then. Whew, I am glad I didn't run out and put my Den. in full sun!

And 100% of UV rays are blocked.

The main thing as far as sun burning the orchid leaves is the infra-red rays. They do the burning. I am not sure that UV rays do any damage to plants. Of course, that's what causes our skin cancers so its good (for you) that they are blocked.

That Rajasthani fellow? We picked him up in a small antique store walking about near Canal Street in New York City a few years ago. Klaus and I spotted him and he had to come home with us right there and then. I use him quite often balancing some small plants on his head when taking pictures inside. I like him!

I didn't realize you block that much sun in your OC. Can't argue with success!

My first post on ATP. Thanks to Ursula maintaining the forum and my thanks to Jim for your post and great ID photos the caused me to want to join ATP. Looks Like a good group.

First a family picture of the Vandas and Ascocendas in their pergola. We build this 2 years ago and the orchids have taken over. The plank spacing gives us 50% shade but we did get some burning when it was so hot 2 weeks ago.

Still, I don't think you're blocking 100% of the UV, or your plants wouldn't be getting what they need, which includes the full spectrum of sunlight, right?

Think of it as the Aluminet shading out half the sunlight getting to the polycarb, then the polycarb filtering half of that. So they're still getting 25%, I think.

Welcome Bud and thanks for the great show! Your Vandas are doing much better than mine so I will prod you for some tips. I love the look of your pergola. Can you show us more?

Elaine, I don't know how all of these layers work together. What I do know is that I still have to be careful or I will get sunburn on some plants which seems impossible if you read all of the advertising about these products. Between the OC and mother nature, there is an environment here that I have created and I am still learning which plants are comfortable and which are not. In the end, I don't think it is much different than moving plants around under the oak tree until they seem to be happy; just more expensive.

Thanks everyone for your welcome and your kind comments.

Jim would you fill me in on the term OC. I am planning a shade house enlarging the Dend. pergola after the weather breaks here in the Orlando area. I was planning to use 50% shade cloth for the shade house. We plan to use it for Vandas and Cattleyas. It will have good AM exposure and the afternoon sun will be blocked by a hedge. Suggestions and input appreciated.

Bud, we all have pet names for our growing areas. I had my screened pool area (lanai) remade into a greenhouse a few years ago and was trying to come up with a name for it. It seemed to me that Orchid Conservatory fit it to a tee. Problem was it sounded a little too snooty for my taste. So, I abbreviated it and called it the OC. This is Cleisocentron merrillianum and it always blooms in late Summer for me.

That's a cute little baby, Ursula. What size are the flowers and how tall the stem?
