Finally put some decorations in this mini garden I made last spring. DH made the box, I painted it & covered it with urethane 3 times.



There's a junk yard and cemetery on the left.


A completely disproportionate garden scene in the middle.


Wild animals to the right.


Some mushrooms I made, wood cart I painted, stuff stolen from Lego guys and Barbie.


The heart pastry thing was bought, I made the donuts and burgers, and the chairs.


Made the headstones.


Cars appropriated from toy box, roughed up the paint with sand paper, smashed 'em with a hammer a little.


Rock plants with fake-out lookalikes.

Well done!!! I cannot believe those itty bitty donuts and burgers!!!

TYVM! It's been outside since it was put together last year, so hopefully the plants will continue to survive. If we have another harsh winter like last year, it'll be harder on me than the plants I think. You should make a mini garden! You have a ton of great plants for it already & probably some cute little stuff around the house.

Iv'e never been good with Lithops. I think its too humid here in Central Florida maybe. I love those little guys though!

Here's updated pics from this morning. I couldn't figure out how to keep the big skull in there, but it had elicited mixed reactions anyway. Ponytail palm didn't survive winter this time. Don't think it was colder, but I didn't water it at all for almost 3 mos, it just seemed too cold, that could have been it.



I really will finish the scene in this middle part, soon...


Some Haworthias have survived, though damaged. Some don't look like they will be back. Also think the dryness was harder on them than the temp.


Lithops are splitting again.

Added more stuff over the weekend. A wood church with stained glass window made from Shrinky Dinks. Path bricks, mushrooms, some of the food, & pink birdbath made of Crayola clay, then painted. Animals from various genrés collected over the yrs. "Craft stick" lounge chair. Other items commandeered from Barbie & Lego.









The Lithops that live near the front wall are splitting again. Cool!

I somehow ended up on this thread a couple of days ago, my children were looking at the photos with me. I do not know if this is a good or bad thing, but the two youngest want to do something like this. I am not even sure where to begin. ??? I thought to hold them off by telling them to draw up plans... they got that done. Both have included junk yards.

Beginning is the hardest part. In the most basic terms, there's first a container, some "dirt" to fill it, some plants to decorate, maybe aquarium gravel to sprinkle on top, or something else you prefer. Then the scene, which changes often on mine. I've put newer pics in one or more other discussions on this mini gardening forum, which you can look through to see how it's changed if you want. The plastic dinos are so silly, I think they might be my fav part. Kind of a spoof of the ones with fairies.

The junkyard is just what it looks like, matchbox/hot wheels that were damaged or beat-up looking, made more so by hitting them with a hammer & scratching them up by rubbing them on the sidewalk & with an emery board. Burying them in the ground over winter would probably add a lot of "realism" to them. If you have tons of those little cars like we do, maybe do some now, bury some to trade or add later? Kids have awesome imaginations, I would let 'em use 'em, not give too much direction or preconceived notions.

If you do a web image search, you'll find more mini gardens than you have time to look at. That's how I got the junkyard idea. I was lost until I saw someone else's. Then I knew what I wanted to do. I still want to make a scene of gold prospecting/panning along a tiny creek (dry creek bed,) but need to find the right cacti for it. Got the idea for that from a bag of tiny gravel painted gold that I found on clearance at WM a couple yrs ago. I'm sure that's what it's made for, right? What else could it be...? LOL!
