Say I search for plants suitable for mini garden:
http://garden.org/plants/searc...

(IDK why pasting the URL to the completed search isn't working right here, tried 3 times. Works great on Facebook!)

They seem to be in order by common name, with those that don't have one at the top, alphabetically by genus. It would be sooooo much more helpful and logical to be able to sort by genus.

A while back there was a discussion about being able to list the genus name first in search results and plant lists. I'm still finding it very awkward to scroll through my list and maintain focus on genus names. Or if the names were on different lines, where focus could remain in 1 spot while scrolling, that would be the next-best thing, no zig-zaggig eyeballs.

@Zuzu, I have a related question. I agreed to keep an eye on the "suitable for mini gardening" characteristic, but when I see the number go up in the search results, how can I find which new plant has been given this designation?

Tiffany, I'm not sure that there is a way of finding the latest plants added to that category, but I think you should relax and not try to keep tabs every time the count rises. Just check the listings every month or every couple of months to see whether something unsuitable has been added. Smiling

As for the search results, I see what you mean. I would have thought that the jumbled results could be blamed on entries listed in order of popularity, but that doesn't seem to be the case. The first half of the entries are in order by genus and the second half are in order by common name. It's peculiar, I agree. It looks odd to jump in the second half from Anacampseros to Pilea to Crassula to Soleirolia to Fenestraria, breaking the rules of capitalization for the genera, simply to keep the common names in alphabetical order.

I personally have no great affection for common names, but they are handy when I'm searching for plants and I'm not sure of the genus. I wish, though, that they could be used only as a search aid and would never affect the alphabetical order of entries.

TY for your reply!

Oh I'm always relaxed, but something like that would be cool. The number of search results is how one would know something new was added, to scroll through the search results to find the new(s) one to look at.

If do-able from administrative end, would be cool/handy for users to be able to save searches & be alerted when something new is added. I think a lot of people would use and love that, for a wild, wide variety of applications.

I don't know about affection for one or the other, but almost all resource sites list plants by botanical epithet first.

I said this because in preview the URL wasn't working - and taking up like 6 lines of type. It *looks* correct above, but doesn't produce the completed search when clicked. Just FYI.

I know what you mean. I have the same trouble when I try to provide a link to advanced search results with lots of entries. I think there is a way to make the link work, but I don't know what it is.

Yes, that works perfectly. I'll star your post and use it from now on. Smiling
