This may be just a 'trash' tree or might be something valuable. If it's a keeper I can take cuttings.
The leaves are variable in size and shape and I was thinking possibly related to mulberry?

The palm-like form reminds me of maple, but I've never seen one quite like that.

Okay, I'd be inclined to rule out mulberry.

So far my research gives me the answer 'immature white mulberry leaf' but the answers were not from 'official tree people', only from blogs and forums.
As a rule, unless the poster is known to me I tend to mistrust those. But chelle has the actual tree so I believe her.

The dried, powdered leaves of the mulberry can be used as tea. I will take cuttings, even though this is the wrong time of year, and it they root for me I will keep the tree small, either coppiced or pollarded and harvest the young leaves.

On second thought, probably pollarded as my dog might pee on the coppiced tree leaves.

Yes. We have these, and more of these, and more of these....

They grow really fast, Greene, and the taproots are generally longer than the saplings are tall! My plan was to keep that one by the driveway short and manageable...not! It got away from me very quickly. Hopefully yours will do better for you. My son and I love the fruit, but none of us appreciate the stains on the cars; from both the fallen fruit and the birds (and others) who visit it.

I grew up eating Mulberry fruit and knew where there was one tree which gave white fruit. Until today I thought I knew every shape a Mulberry leaf could be. Guess I will stop calling it the 'mitten leaf tree'.

Thanks. If we are positive that it is Morus alba I can add some pictures to the database. Should we wait a few days in case this is a special cultivar or hybrid?
One thing I learned from all my searches. I assumed that 'alba' meant that the fruit would be white. What do I know? Several sites tell me that the fruit color can vary from white to reddish to purpley color. I'm still checking on that.

I thought it had been positively identified. I too have always thought the botany definition for alba is "white" ...

I'd say if you aren't truly sure the plant is Morus alba to leave this open awhile and see if anyone else pops in with suggestions.

I am happy with Morus alba but someone may come along with some 'extra' information. Waiting a week should be enough time.

I was nearly certain that I'd added quite a few pictures to the DB, but I can't find them now. I do know that I'd done a heap of research to try to figure out which mine was, but maybe I was still undecided enough that I went on to something else and forgot about it.

I guess I'll plug mine in here Mulberry (Morus) until something definitive comes up.

That's a good idea to upload the photos at the general Mulberry entry with a caption that says "possibly Morus alba". That way if someone happens along those entries in the database and comes up with a more definitive ID they could be moved to the correct database location.
