From what I can see over the past year, no discussions about Philos. I have more, but just took pics of a couple today. They came inside to escape the low 40's predicted tonight.

Oh! I'd love to have both of those. (Cinta, I think that's a same pot in upper R corner I've admired before? Either way, definitely admired yesterday & today!)

There's 4 kinds in this pic, though IDK if they're discernible. The big one on the left has a bud - the 'Black Cardinal.'

Dag nabbit, that pic's fuzzy. I'll take another one when the sun stops coming in that window.

I think Philo's may be discussed more often on the Aroids Forum: http://garden.org/forums/view/... but since many of us grow them as house plants it's a good subject for this forum as well.

I used to grow quite a few Philo's years ago, lost some to winter freezes, others when I had to travel a lot when my mom was sick and I gave some away. I only grow a couple of of them nowadays.

P. xanadu (bought as tiny plant in 2006) ... P. 'Brasil'

No ID's on these two (slow growers) that I've had for awhile, both were almost killed during a very cold winter a few years ago but I managed to save pieces to re-start:

'Prince of Orange' that I got this past spring. I lost a large one to a freeze in 2010 and the second plant was labeled 'Lemon Lime' (x domesticum) but I'm not certain of that ID:
Thumb of 2014-10-24/plantladylin/6df2a0 Thumb of 2014-10-24/plantladylin/8d8ff2

Bought as P. domesticum but I can't find any info on a Philo by that name:
Thumb of 2014-10-24/plantladylin/5882da

This one was labeled Philodendron brandtianum but I'm not certain that's correct:

Fantastic, beautiful plants!

"This one was labeled Philodendron brandtianum".
Especially Fabulous! I like this pic better than the 4 already up (in the database entry for that plant!)

P. domesticum:

"No ID's on these two (slow growers)"
P. erubescens?

Interesting, that shows P. domesticum with P. hastatum being a synonym. Catalogue of Life comes up with zero hits when I search for P. domesticum but there is a P. hastatum listed. Blinking Confused

We don't have a P. domesticum listed in our database here on ATP but there is a listing for Spade-Leaf Philodendron (Philodendron hastatum)

This one has red stems and red blush on the reverse of the leaves so I'm sure it's P. erubescens:
Thumb of 2014-10-24/plantladylin/8c5b3e

I went back in my computer files and this is a juvenile form of P. panduriforme:

Just a few weeks ago I bought this Philodendron pedatum. I really like the leaf shape! I haven't found much info on growing it as a house plant but hoping that it will be able to put up with my conditions.

Hi sunnyshine, Welcome to ATP! That's a lovely Philodendron pedatum you have; one I've never seen for sale around here but I rarely see any philo's except the common heart leaf vine. I don't know what area you live in but I'd say as a house plant make sure it gets plenty of bright light but no direct sun which may scorch the leaves. Make sure you use a well draining soil, one that is not heavy and water-retentive; keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy and it should do just fine. I'd say your plant could be potted up to a larger container also. Philo's like high humidity and you can sit your plant on a tray of moist pebbles which will help keep the humidity levels up. Keep us posted on how that beauty does for you!

I googled and found information for P. pedatum at the Exotic Rainforest site: http://www.exoticrainforest.co... It really is a gorgeous Philo!

Thanks. It does seem like Philo. pedatum is not a particularly common houseplant. Seems like most people who grow it are those who have tropical gardens or greenhouses. I don't know if that is because it is less suited to houseplant life than other philos or some other reason. I will try it out and if it grows well for me, I'll be sure to offer cuttings to other philo lovers so we can get it into the houseplant world. Smiling

@purpleinopp,
I read your comment about your 'Black Cardinal' producing what you believe to be an inflorescence right after a new leaf (that they only produce one new leaf at a time) on GardenWeb. I'm curious, what do you think of this on my 'Moonlight'? It's in the process of opening a new leaf, but right after the new leaf is what appears to be a second leaf (do you think maybe it's an inflorescence?). I'm all ears!

I apologize, the picture isn't the best quality.

Oooh! Sorry, I can't see what you see well enough in that pic to have an opinion about it, but unless I'm mistaken (and somebody please school me if so, only ever seen 1 bloom on one in person) if it's forming 'below' a leaf, it can only be a bud? I don't think they branch out with new leaf tips, or make more than 1 leaf at a time (per growth tip,) but am a relatively new observer to this kind of Philo, welcoming any info folks might have to share.

If correct about visual interpretation, it looks like another bud is forming on my plant. Original bud is the large thing to the left, little nubbin to the right is what I think is another bud. Both bud suspects are coming from the petiole of an open leaf, right where it comes from the main stem.
Thumb of 2014-10-27/purpleinopp/15dd54

From a little farther back - new leaf is very tall on the left (1), to its' right is the first 'bud' (2,) then the one I noticed last night to the right of that (arrow pointing to.)
Thumb of 2014-10-27/purpleinopp/711965

(Duh, edited because I attached the version of the pic without numbers, arrow...)

Tiff,
Sorry, I was doing my best to take a closeup picture without it being blurry, but my camera refused to cooperate. Hilarious! I see on mine what you see on yours (except yours is larger), so I'm hoping what we both have is buds forming (it sure does look like it though). I told Hubby I'd need to change my underwear if it blooms (Okay, maybe that was TMI), as I'd never had a Philo bloom for me... or a ZZ Plant, Snake Plant... anything out of the ordinary. *Blush*

And wow, not one but two!? I already liked your 'Black Cardinal,' but now I really, really like it. Drooling

I know you'll keep us updated on its progress. I will do the same with mine!

Nothing new going on with my Philo either. A little bit bigger than it was, but nothing really spectactular. I'm not sure mine is a flower though, it looks too thin IMO.
