My 3 year old peace lily was transplanted into a larger pot. It has now thrown off multiple "babies" around the perimeter of the pot. And it has stopped blooming for the past 3 month or so. Do they have a dormant period? I've been feeding with a 0-10-10 liquid fertilizer to stimulate blooms but so far no results. Suggestions please - - -

Scott, are you growing this plant indoors our out? Temperature and light variations will make Spaths start and stop blooming. Also, I'll bet the re-potting process started yours in its baby-making spree. They sometimes bloom better when they're root-bound, and once all those baby plants get big, it will get crowded and feel comfy again.

I'd go back to a balanced fertilizer until spring, then try the bloom booster again. It's usually futile, and can damage the plant to try to 'force' blooming if it's in a reproduction cycle. It will need the nitrogen component to grow big gorgeous leaves before flowering again.

it's also busy growing roots, since it's got all this new space available. so roots and offsets - there's no way it's going to bloom for awhile.
mine bloomed indoors in may-june and then stopped and is now starting again. of course, spaths last for a long time; but it seems that 2 active blooming periods (growing new spaths) is all mine can manage so far in one year. i got it last year in july - as a good start in 6" pot. and it's still is in it's original 6" pot and is ultra pot-bound!
but i also read that they bloom more when repotted and given more room....so now i really don't know what's best.

i suppose yours is outdoors for the most part and gets good light and humidity. but still, given these conditions, does it produce new spathes in spurts? or continuously? mine is in west window with good bright dappled light (i have a 'domino' variegated one) and i feed it with AV 8-8-8 and TR osmo 14-14-14 granules - so it's pretty much on constant feed.

Definitely not what I'm doing with it! Mine is in a window box outside a patio door, and largely gets ignored. It blooms in fits and starts and after I wrote the above 'advice' I went and looked at it. I'd be embarassed to show you a picture of it right now. It definitely needs repotting and some fertilizer.

But it's got blooms, and I never feed it anything but balanced fert! They're really very resilient, and they like the humidity and high rainfall in our summers so I get away with ignoring it. See, I live in what is essentially a jungle in the summertime, and then give my plants TLC in the cooler weather.

oh, i envy you! i wish i could just ignore at least some of my plants...for a little while...
so what's the TLC in wintertime then? i know you still got enough light even in winter! so does it bloom in winter too?

Repotting and a little fertilizer, plus supplementary water when it doesn't rain for a week or two. Our fall, winter, and spring are relatively dry here, other than the ever-present humidity (which is also generally less in the cooler seasons). I prune to thin the overhanging oak tree branches to give a little more light to the shade lovers, and that's about it.

I give it a tablespoon of Osmocote in fall, another in February when it starts to warm up, and another at the end of May. We are restricted from use of fertilizer in the summer months here anyway, as it rains so hard and the soil is mostly sand the fert ends up in the rivers and the Gulf. So County ordinance forbids fertilizing between May 30 and Sept 30. Everybody then just makes use of slow-release pelleted fert to last through the summer anyway, but that's what we should be using so it's worked out well.

Thanks to you both. San Francisco is in zone 8B, and I'm growing my Spath indoors. It is just next to - not directly in front of - a south facing window, so in winter it gets soft direct sun in the mornings. {In the summer the sun is so high I get no direct sun} I'll be patient and wait for the blooms; now it's a healthy little forest of foliage!
