I have this beautiful hot pink single petal peony. Could you tell what it might be? It's an early bloomer and it started blooming this past Saturday (4/24/2010), fragrant, strong stem.

Lili, how long have you had it and do you know where you got it from? Or is it an heirloom?

It was purchase at Wally's World about 3 or 4 years ago, so I don't think it's a heirloom. Back then, I didn't know anything about labeling plants, just buying and planting. I just love the fragrance though.

Oh lord, it's probably one that's been in the trade for a very long time. Most likely, even if you had kept the name from the Wally-world package it wouldn't have been correct. You might try the Heartland Peony Society's database. The peony identification utility is quite helpful. :)

If it was several years ago you probably purchased as Blue something? Wallyworld sold two different ones in suceeding years both looked almost identical. I want to say Blue Lagoon but will have to look deeper in my notes. They were renamed plants from China that have been circulating in the trade for a while.

The other one was Lavender Lady.

That's right Alana, I forgot all about Blue Lagoon and Lavender Lady. Wasn't the picture on the front of Blue Lagoon actually a double tulip colored to look blue. Smiling LOL

That does look like a Blue Lagoon!

However, the description said it fades to have a blue-hue, but I don't think mine looks 'blue-hued' at all. It starts out like a deep hot pink color and as it opens, it's more of a deep pink. The flower is pretty large. I'll measure tomorrow and let you know. Strong stem and strong fragrance too.

None of them were ever blue... or Lavender. It's just the marketing gimmick on the box. Enjoy your pink peony. Smiling

Thanks for help identifying even if I didn't remember buying a 'blue' peony. I think I just bought it 'cause it was cheap.

Lili, that is how most of us became addicted. We had some from a G'mother or such, or in my case, there were several on the farm when we bought it. Then you start noticing the little boxes of peonies in the big box stores, and then potted ones in nurseries, and from there you want more varied and sophisticated peony and so on and so forth! Smiling Yep, you are well on your way with the rest of us to a fun addiction!. Smiling

All you peony lovers out there - if you wish to find a peony, or identify one, try Carsten Burkhardt's peony data base - just google it. It's German, but it comes up in english. GREAT WEBSITE!
