Found this growing along a back road last year. At first thought it was an iris, but with the flat growth of the leaves and how tall it gets, I decided to just hope it blooms and it did finally.

Well, I'll be!! I had wanted one of those, but did not put 2 & 2 together. I wonder how it would make the trip to Calif?

From what I just read, you would treat them the same as iris, and they grow in all but the hottest zones here. Bringing live plants into Ca. might be a problem though. They can be grown from seed, however.

I have had good luck growing them from seed using the winter sowing method , but they also can be self sown .
If you don't want to transport I would be glad to send seed Smiling

Marti, I don't know where, in Ca. you are moving to, but I highly recommend you invest in a Sunset Western Garden Book. We have so many diverse zones here, and it will show you your zone on the maps and tell you if a given plant does well there. Those seeds need 6 weeks of cold stratification. There is a website, but it isn't as user friendly, or complete as the book.

Well, the Blackberry will grow there, but if you start from seed, 6 weeks in the fridge.
Sunset zone 24, nice mild climate. I believe that is the highest zone for this plant.

gardengus, I'll keep that in mind. I don't know what all I can have at the trailer park as they don't have a lot of room.

Worst case, Marti, you COULD grow it in a pot... I've done it here in VA with success. They're such interesting plants, aren't they? I used to travel to the Ventura/Oxnard area on a regular basis - miss it! Lovey dubby You'll love living there! Thumbs up

BTW, I don't think you can bring ANY plant in soil across the state line into California. Seeds or a local source once you get there would be your best option.

Blackberry Lily seeds would be wonderful. I'm in Maryland near Annapolis. Because of my medical issues and using a power wheelchair; any plants I get would most likely be house plants. Do these lillies make good house plants? What care do they require? I am not certain what kind of trade we could arrange, however, I could re-emburse you for the postage for the seeds. There is no hurry because anything worth having is worth working for or waiting for until things are straightened out. I want to know more about the plant so that i can be certain of giving it proper and needed care it deserves.

Please let me know how we can make this exchange.
