My "O" term for today has to be organic matter + oxygen! I spend more time hauling in and working organic matter into the soil than any other chore in the garden. I know clay will grow fine daylilies, and I have grown them in clay. But the ease of working daylilies in sandy loam with tons of organic matter added to the soil is an almost heavenly experience compared to working daylilies in clay, where you need a pick axe and a pry bar to dig and a hammer and chisel to knock the soil off the roots. There are very few spots in my current gardening location with much clay, and it is in the shade stays moist most of the time and has never been the typical Alabama "suck your truck in" type clay. The soil in my garden is improving every year, it is light and airy with lots of oxygen getting to the roots and allowing the breakdown of all the organic matter. This year with the new daylilies planted last year I am hoping for an excellent bloom season. What a pleasure it is to sink a shovel or fork into the soil and have it sink almost effortlessly deep into the soil.
