We have all seen those threads along the lines of "If you were going to be marooned on a desert island, what 5/10/name-your-number daylilies would you bring?"

I was idly thinking the other day, of what if there were some sort of EOTWAWKI (End of The World as We Know It) disaster, on a *local* scale, which would mandate a hasty (and maybe permanent) evacuation...one in which, furthermore, even if I *could* return, the daylilies left behind might no longer be there. As to what type of disaster, feel free to fill in the blank on your favorite disaster scenario.... wildfire (maybe burns up the daylilies), hurricane/flood (maybe washes away the daylilies? or looters steal them?), geological hazard (earthquake with a crevasse gulping down the daylilies, or a sinkhole doing the same - though in those cases there wouldn't be advanced warning), a Fukushima/Chernobyl type disaster (you might have to smuggle out whatever glowing-in-the-dark plants), alien invasion, invading armies, etc. etc.

The whole point of this is, you can only save some number of daylilies (let's say 10 tops) before you have to get out of dodge. Since you won't have to dig them, you can take unlimited seeds with you, and some number of sprouted several-to-a-pot seedlings. Anything else, you have to dig, but you don't have much time. Assume that once you have gotten to safety, you can make a new garden (or maybe go back home and rebuild your old garden, depending on the disaster scenario), and you will have the rest of the daylily world to draw on, to beg, borrow, or buy new or replacement daylilies from.

Which daylilies do you save, in those frantic pre-evacuation moments? Remember, you don't have much time, and you are also going to be wanting to save family photos, important papers, keepsakes, your spouse/elderly parent(s)/kids/pets, and maybe pack a bag or two of clothes and grab some water and food for your escape.

So - which daylilies are saved?

For myself, I was thinking that top priority should go to the ones that would be difficult (if not impossible) to replace, which would mean favorite seedlings or daylilies which are no longer commercially available (or maybe only one or two nurseries had the plant the last time that I looked). Daylilies of sentimental importance could also go on that list. High performance isn't necessarily a factor; importance to your garden is.

Currently, my list is over 20 daylilies; I would probably be overtaken by the disaster while trying to decide what gets left behind Rolling on the floor laughing . Apart from those of sentimental value or difficult to replace, I confess that I have a few that I could almost certainly replace, but I really like them, they are decent sized clumps, and I don't want to take any chances on losing them. Whistling

Among my list:

(I really like it, and I'm not sure I could replace it)

(I'm about 99% certain that's what it is...)

(my daughter graduated from Amherst College 2 years ago)

You can see that the list is already over 10 daylilies, plus I want to save some seedlings, and then there are those I-can-replace-them-but... daylilies.

What daylilies would *you* save, and why?

Ok here is my list. And let me say this was real hard. I went with mostly seedlings, since they are irreplacable. Also a few absolute favorites. There were several I left behind even though I love them and they represent family members. Those are ones that could be found again though so I was ruthless. If only I could be this ruthless when culling the seedling bed. Also I plan on making off with several hundred frozen vials of pollen and 3 grocery bags of seed from the last 3 years. Yes, this is a really hard exercise. As I said, my list is over 20. You are a better seedling saver than I am. I tip my hat to you. I did not mention my seeds (about 4 quart sized bags), or seedlings: presently 1 flat (which will be planted into a bed in a week or two, so I would probably lose those Crying ), 2 under-the-bed storage containers of smaller pots, 1x 3 gallon pot, and 2-4 that I would have to dig up. At a minimum, I would save the seeds, the potted seedlings, and at least 2 of the seedlings that I would have to dig - given the time. If necessary, I would trade two from my above list of registered cultivars to dig two of those seedlings; those would probably be 'Newberry White Dove' and 'Lord Jeffrey Amherst', since at this time, both of those are still available from at least one nursery.

The bud count isn't high... maybe 8-12 ish. I don't know how it would do in a good location; here, it is in a poor location with a TON of shade, literally only a few hours of sun a day, and it only gets fertilized once a year. Really, it's surprising that it blooms at all. (In case you are wondering, this garden tends to run on benign neglect. Not everything gets fertilized every year, never mind several times a year.)

But 'Lavender Dew' is one of the earlier daylilies in the garden (never mind that it is registered as a midseason; I think it's maybe more an EM), and it is one that I look forward to every year.

My picture, by the way, was taken later in the day. The color does fade, and the image shows that.

If bud count concerns you, you might look for descendants of it, or of its tet conversion. Patrick Stamile had some introductions out of the tet conversion, and at least one of them (I took a quick look) had a high bud count.

That is an interesting selection of keepers, Mike. The only one of those that I have is 'Beautiful Edgings'. I considered taking it, but it doesn't open as well as I like, and it appears that it can still be purchased online.

I know what you mean by "feeling bad" about leaving things behind; I definitely agree about 'Sears Tower' - but it is available online. (I also have 'Bela Lugosi' (but as a new plant *Blush* , no evaluation of behavior here) and 'Boundless Beauty' (I have only seen it in bloom once; I have to move it).)

Also on my hate-to-leave-behind list (and only because I believe I can still get it) is 'Osterized'. ('Osterized' is also in a raised (boxed) bed where it would be difficult to dig up. I keep meaning to divide it, but I've been putting off that task.)

I think it would just about kill me to leave those two behind - 'Osterized' and 'Sears Tower' - and then discover that they were no longer commercially available! Crying I would then truly be reduced to begging - or bribing Whistling - to get new pieces of them.

If I could not get to the seedling beds and had to choose from registered cultivars then I would add to the first three plants listed above...

Should the EOTWAWKI event happen during winter there would be no way of digging plants out of the frozen ground so...
Plan 1 would be to take all the seed bags in the fridge...
Plan 2 IF seeds are already started in trays, take all trays ( can I take all of them or only 10? There are some really good crosses planted Big Grin )

It's fascinating seeing the choices people make.

Wonderful seedlings, Char! I think that I would grab those in preference to some of your chosen registered cultivars. Whistling

How many seedling trays you can take? Ah, er, hmm... whatever you can snatch-n-grab and shove into the car, I guess. (With all of the trouble we are all having, I would guess our cars would be getting pretty full!)

Guybo - not all of us have trucks!

I do have a beat-up SUV, which is our fur mobile. I guess that our dog could always ride shotgun, which would give me more room for plants. (He refuses to stay in the cargo area and normally has the entire backseat at his disposal, but he has aspirations for a promotion.... whenever we have to quick run into a store or carryout food place on the way home from the dog park, we always find him sitting in the driver's seat when we return.)

As for more mundane things... DH has a Nissan sedan; he can (try to) carry all of the papers, photos, keepsakes, valuables, books, computers (and/or drives), luggage, etc. But given that we have a ginormous library which wouldn't fit in both of our cars (something which I did not previously consider), even if we weren't taking anything else, there's another wrenching decision to be made, in the form of "which X books do we take...". I suspect that if DH had his way, it would be nothing BUT books and computer drives (well, maybe also one wall portrait, one painting, a few photos, our laptops, one tiny overnight bag for clothes), and ONE (or two) daylilies.

Thus, for us, instead of my frantically digging up daylilies, the most likely scenario is that we would probably be arguing over which books to save, and how many books versus how many daylilies, while the disaster overtook us. Rolling my eyes. (If we did escape, at least the seeds would be saved! Those can be stuffed under the driver's seat, or in some other corner not taken up by boxes of books. All is not lost! Rolling on the floor laughing )
