This has come up a few times and I'm wondering how many people are dealing with this issue. Say you are hybridizing and you have seedlings of a certain plant that you want to separately add to your plant list. Right now, you can't really do that since every plant in your plant list must already exist in the database.

I've been asked to make the plant list feature work with plants that are not in the database. In the case of plants like this, you'd be able to add custom details for your own "made up" plants just as if they were in the database. But they would only exist in your plant list.

So, my question is: how many of you would use a functionality like this?

I was planning on playing around with hybridizing my Hibiscus, this summer. I think I would like this feature. Also we have discussed before about being able to upload our own picture to the plant list. Since these new plants would not be in the database, we would need to be able to add our own pictures.

We could also add photos of our seedlings? If so I would find it useful.

Yes, being able to add photos would definitely be part of this.

It would be a huge undertaking, though, which is why I want to know that it'll get some use by a good number of people before I expend the effort.

Okay, this is good. I'm glad there's a desire for it.

Basically, eventually the Plant List will become a personal plant database, with most of the features of the full database, especially databoxes that you can control on your own. You'll basically be the moderator of your own database that lives separate from the main database.

Plants that have a match in the database will continue to act as usual.

A possible alternative would be to add duplicate plants ( no clue if this would be more or less difficult). I have several NOIDS that will likely never be definitively ID'd. Currently these are in my list under the parent plant with personal photos included in the comments showing each -- hence 2-3 plants may be sharing one entry. It would be nice to somehow separate these to individual entries to better track care, problems, etc.

That would be a simple solution but it would not give people the power to setup characteristics for each plant, which is an important functionality that has been requested.

I think it would be very useful and much appreciated. Currently i have seedling volunteers in my garden. I know the genus in some cases but the plants have to grow up in order to determine the species. Photos of seedlings in the Database are so important to me. I would like to see every plant in the Database have at least one good seedling photo.

This feature would allow me to track plants of uncertain/unknown species so when all the necessary data is available it will be ready to add to the DB.

This sounds great to me; and I really like the part about being able to add our own photos! Thumbs up

Several times I have found myself wishing for this feature and I would use it but it isn't *as* imperative to me as it is to those who presently hybridize. If you undertake it Dave, I will be very happy to have such available for use. At present I would be using it for NOID's.

I agree with Ann-- it is totally not imperative to me; but I would really like to be able to use our own photo, or select a photo to use!

It is not an imperative feature, but it would certainly be a nice one. Apart from using it to track NOIDs and seedlings, it can also be used to add tet conversions of diploid daylilies to the plant list.

Right now, the database only allows for diploids, but not the Tetra conversions. (As an example... I have both 'Brocaded Gown' and Tetra 'Brocaded Gown', but only the dip is in the database... my options are to add a duplicate diploid 'Brocaded Gown' plant (if that is still even possible after some bug fixes) and make a notation that it is the Tetra version, or else just add a note to the one diploid entry.)

Being able to upload our images of these NOIDs, seedlings, and tet conversions is a must.

Thanks for considering this feature!

I would certainly be interested in this feature for seedlings of Daylilies, Brugmansias, perhaps other plant species. I have lots of seedlings of those two mentioned.

Would we be allowed to look at other members entries and photos?

I would be most interested in seeing what certain crosses produce. (There could be a wide range of characteristics from two named parents.) It would be very interesting and helpful to see what might be dominating genetic characteristics (especially in the blooms).
