i had the most gorgeous spider plant that died over the winter. A few green leaves but mostly dried and brown leaves. I took it out of the dirt and put the roots in water. Is there any hope?? What should I be doing? Help please!!!!

Are you sure you put the correct climate zone? I think you may be a USDA 6b zone.

For the spider plant question:
What did you do already? I mean, did you have the plant in the house or was it outside? Did you let it freeze? Or forget to water it? Or over water it?

I've heard of folks who've grown Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum) in water. You could try leaving the roots in a glass of water for a few weeks to see if perhaps new sprouts will appear.

@JB grows a lot of Spider Plants and is very knowledgeable with them so maybe she will pop in and be able to offer some advice.

Do the roots feel firm? I lost several of my spider plants a year or so ago to an unexpected extreme cold snap, but was able to salvage a few. The roots of the ones that survived were nice and firm, while the ones that were toast were spongy. And for what it's worth, a few days ago my dog snapped a few baby plants off one of the mother plants. They didn't have roots, but I stuck them in small containers of water and they have developed roots already.

Wish I could send some your way. I put a big pot with this plant in the back of large flower bed while I was deciding what to do with it. Forgot about it and now I have so many "babies" -- makes a really pretty ground cover. Easy to pull up if I wish.

Spider plants are toughies..if there is still some green leaves there is hope..and as woofie said, if those roots still looks firm, it has a fighting chance.

See these photos: this one is a baby spider plant I have been callously taking care of during winter outdoors, I always end up stepping on it. So as the winter ensued, it did not do well..lots of dead leaves. I just placed it on top of one of my empty containers. As you can see, as dead looking as it is, the roots still look firm, and 2nd photo shows it is starting to produce a new leaf. During winter, my spider plants gets only the rain given by Mother Nature. As it is, our winter has been so dismal, but the spiders are ably surviving, those roots hoard enough moisture to see them through, and will resume active growing once temps are nicely warm again.


You can dip the roots in some water for a day or so, then move it to the usual soil media you have. Put it in part sun/part shade for now, in a warm area. Do not give it any fertilizer. Allow the plant to recover and acclimate again.

I am sorry to be so tardy but weather is not being very cooperative and I am behind in my posts.I have to agree with @Greene, how did you manage to kill your Spider? Depends on what happened if you can revive it.

Unless you live on top of a mountain in VW, 4A probably is not your zone.
