I had never tried rooting Heuchera leaves like this but it worked. Had tried stems in water but no luck. I pulled the stem off slowly getting the part where stem comes off root/mother plant. Stuck it down under mother plant and forgot about them. Repotting the mother NO ID and found these 2 rooted stems today. No rooting hormone used. Have potted the 2 stems in small pots to keep an eye on them.

I was just messing around pulling dead leaves and of course I pulled off a good one. Then it hit me stick it down to see if it will root. One had all the end of the stem the other looks like only part of it come off. The weird thing is the mother got morning sun but the leaf was under cover of mother leaves.
Going to try this on my old favorite Purple Place (have made many divisions). Some of them are different shades.
I tried willow water with the stems years ago but they didn't root.

It will work as long as you have a piece of stem on the end of the leaf. If not it will just stay a leaf or 2 with roots and never really turn into a real plant. I had a few from just leaves that lasted a couple of seasons and never turned into anything.

I think I understand where the leaves come from now. I made sure to get the entire petiole and the enlarged part at the bottom. It seems the new growth comes from that point. Is that correct?

I would think that's right. More of the thick base where the stem comes from is what roots with the cutting. So excited about these cuttings, sure hope it works!

Me too! These things are so expensive. I want to put them around all of my trees. At 10-12 dollars a piece that would be a lot of cash. LOL.

Many trees are like this as well, by making the soil around them more suitable for their species, survival instinct. I watched an amazing documentary on the secret life of plants

Has anyone else tried this? If so, how well did it work? It would make trading much easier if we could all root these this easily!

I have never just pulled a leaf off and rooted it, but I have successfully separated sections of the clumps and transplanted them. I was looking at one of my heucheras that is about five years old yesterday, and was thinking it looked like there was about five sections (groupings) of leaves within that one plant and I should divide it so I can transplant some elsewhere. If I get a chance in the next few weeks, I hope to do some of that.
