We came from here

The thread "Our Orchid blooms in May 2015" in Orchids forum

Another month went by with lots of Orchid blooms and wonderful discussions, and now it is again time for a new thread.
Please all join in and have fun.
I am starting with my C. Janice Evans 'Sweet Sixteen' which opened over the weekend.

Nageliella purpurea -
this one produces the tiniest blooms on long dangling spikes which survive the seasons. The look dead for sure in Winter, but comes Spring, new buds appear on those dry ends and the plant waves long happy spikes in the slightest breeze.

Oh, such lovelies to start the new month, Ursula. I always enjoy that Coelogyne, and Janice Evans is a beauty.

Mj, so sorry you've been sick - feel better soon! We look forward to your pictures.

Melissa, thanks for the info on sulphur. I'll be careful using it around my Dens but I'm going to give it a try and suffer a few deformed blooms for the sake of keeping my plants alive and well. Growing outside in Florida . . . what can I say, it's risky! Every bug and fungus likes to live here for the same reason we do.

Group hug Sending healthy thoughts to MJ.

Ursula, Thanks for the nice start to our June blooms. Beautiful form and color on your 'Sweet Sixteen'! I'm quite fond of that Coelogyne too.

The storm clouds are building in the east again. We just may be in for another 7:00 PM toad drownder.

We certainly made up for the lack of rain the last month. More rain expected tonight and temps might moderate by Wednesday. Hopefully, since it was way too chilly today, we never made it up to 60 F today.

You can thank me for that cold, rainy day Ursula. I brought that weather back east with me from the cold, rainy deserts of Utah . . . it was bizarre, and now it's sunny and beautiful there. Well, thankfully since I planted out a bunch of stuff that needs warm weather.

Going to have to see if we're in for rain this evening, too. I wanted to spray my new 'stuff' after it cooled off but no use if it will just be washed off.

Woe is right, Elaine. we all hate to see that. That new sheath in there doesn't look too hot. Perhaps more sunshine is needed?

Hm, you may be right! I'll have to watch that shelf unit to see how much sun it's actually getting. At this time of year the sun has moved to behind an oak branch in the morning, full sun in the middle of the day and shaded by the bamboo clump in the afternoons.

Opening in the cage despite chilly rains and temps again down to 50 degr F for a couple of days, are Vandas Ratchabury Beauty and Pakchong Blue. Happily it is a bit warmer today and we have the sun breaking through, much better.

We have been cool here too and finally dry. It was very nice early AM, around 58F. The lows are supposed to stay around low 60's and highs in the low to mid-80's the rest of the week. Just about perfect weather.

Oo, those two are lovely, and they make a really nice pair too.

I have a little mini catt with a flower today, one of my bonus plants from C&H last fall:

A couple of new flowers out in the OC. First is Brassia [Brs.] Orange Delight (Brs. andreettae x Brs. Mary Traub Levin)

I just love the color on this Brassocatanthe [Bct.] Roman Holiday (Ctt. Chocolate Drop x B. nodosa). Nice waxy flowers.

It was overcast and rainy yesterday so I took advantage of it and finished cleaning the OC windows. It looks nice now for the church choir members who will arrive tomorrow at 6:00 PM.

I love both of those flowers, Jim. I assume the Bct. will have long-lasting blooms.

Jim, I need a favor. I am trying to pin down what my NOID purple Vanda is and I have three possibilities. Would you be so kind as to look up their pictures in your OrchidWiz? I tried a Google Image search, but I can't depend on all the pictures there being accurate.

RF Orchids is sure I have a V. tessellate hybrid and they think it is one of Louis Hatos' hybrids. The three possible fits are:

1. V. Sandra Gail Hatos
2. V. Mem. Louis Hatos
3. V. Mem. Lyle Swanson

There is absolutely no rush for these pictures. I have had the plant for well over 5 years and perhaps 10 years without know what it is. Sighing!

Thanks, Jim.

All we are working with is Genra and Species, so when I look these up on OrchidWiz, I get pictures of different varieties. So, I have given you two varieties of each of the three you have asked about. I picked the ones that looked somewhat like yours. I went back and looked at the picture you posted and I didn't have an "aha" moment anywhere in my search. I don't know if this will help or not.

I don't see one that is like mine either. Thanks for taking a look and posting. I'm just going to label is V. tessellata hybrid and quit at that. I guess that's an OK name and will be better than "NOID". I am sure she will be glad to finally have a name. Whistling

Elaine, very pretty Mini Catt. Regarding its size, it sure doesn't follow its Mom, that one is a really good size plant.

Jim, I love the markings on your Brassia x and I have never seen a hybrid with Chocolate Drop I didn't like, nice one! Lovey dubby

Yes that little plant is barely 6in. high. Shrug!

Tarev, don't you just wish you could help those little flowers out a bit. They're so pretty and smell so great.

Jim, I just love the Roman Holiday, both shape and color are gorgeous.

Watching our home team play their first Stanley Cup game, Lightning scored first blood! Hurray! (sorry, I'm Canadian. Hockey is our game, and the Stanley Cup is the super bowl to me.)
