I loved this plant but after several years and many dollars later I started only buying them if I seen them for no more than 3.00. I did not feel my dollar was being spent well when they only lasted one season or two.

I had several survive last winter by growing them in pots and in the fall laying them on their side and piling leaves on top. A few I purchased from Santa Rosa at the end of the season cheap were planted in large pots on the patio and covered with leaves those came out beautiful this summer.

These are in pots and placed close to the hostas for the summer that I will winter on their side.



These one of the combo Herc in the perennial pots on the patio. They are growing nicely this summer and wintered very good in the pots.

I still love these plants. Just nothing like a heuchera them for color in the garden and containers, I'm such a foliage nut.. Also the humming birds love them. However like you I not going to buy one for 12-15 dollars. I been growing some from seed I collect and have gotten some decent plants.

There are the ones that I have for many years and then again there are too many that just fade away way to quickly. At the prices they go for it can be very annoying to loss so many. I am going to try to keep it to just a few new ones a year and hope I select well. I do need to start collecting seeds and try to come up with some special ones.

I picked this Heucherella up at Walmart for 5 dollars , now to figure out what one it is. What do you think?

Julia I feel the same way. There is nothing that offers more beauty for me that a pretty leaf color. I have always said flowers are fleeting foliage is forever.

I was so excited when I started buying these. Bob I have not found any that last more than a year until I started the pot planting dance.

Bob, have 3 guesses Sweet Tea, Buttered Rum or Brass Lantern, in that order.

I was thinking Buttered Rum, but will give it more time to see color changes.

I still love, love, love these plants! Two of them in particular... one is the darker purple one (can't remember the name) and my most favorite ever!! is the Key Lime Pie light green one! It is so very encouraging to see it each Spring. It's one of the first things I see when the snow is gone and it looks so, so beautiful all the time (well, it doesn't really like the hot, hot weather that we sometimes get for a week or two).

My Coral Bells all survive the winters here, and we usually get temps to -30C and sometimes even closer to -40C some winters for a short period of time.

I really liked KLP , but it withered away when the hot humid would come around. Which around here can go from the beginning of July till mid Sept.

Very pretty Conniepr. I wish they were not so fussy. The idea of them was so promising. Some can grow a few. Their long time survival rate is not what I would like for my growing condiitons.

But......I still buy a few if they are cheap because they offer so much. If my new experiment of pots and protected in the winter works I will be less upset about purchasing them.

Yes, I had noticed that tendency even here, however, we usually only get a few weeks of really hot weather each summer; that's probably why I've had such a great success with them here. Our average summer temp is probably closer to 24C (75F) and previously mine were kept in a spot that only gets morning sunshine, in deep shade every afternoon. I'm hoping they will still do okay now that they will be getting more sunshine every day.

Just have to watch for afternoon sun on the light green ones, they tend to burn .

A few years ago, I was smitten and bought about 12 varieties planted in different areas of gardens. Approx $150 ... Yikes!! In 2 years, all dead but 1! Key Lime Pie is living. But in FULL sun, dry soil. No help to my shade gardens. I would never spend more than $2 and only if gorgeous plant. I have very limited space in the sun.

The thrill is definitely gone for me.

Oh I feel your pain. They were marketed as a shade plant. I remember all us hostaholics jumping for joy thinking we had a beautiful plant to compliment the shade garden. When they died the first year then they said "Oh they need some sun"

Gave them some sun then it was to much sun. Only Morning sun. They still died then they said " You planted them to deep". On, and on......The plant is a tender perennial and in reality it is a annual.

So I agree with you for my climate and weather conditions "NO MORE than 2.00 and definitely not a internet order plant to add to the price with shipping.

I am still in love with them and want a lot more. I don't have the right shade right now because of drought. I think that will change.

I only have six and all six have survived significant neglect. That works for me ...

I have to purchase them through the internet as I cannot purchase them up here, but I am experimenting this year with dividing in fall and planting plants purchased at the end of the year on sale.

I want more. I have been looking up the linage where possible and have a feeling for which ones will do better in my climate vs a more humid climate. It's still guesswork, but it's more than just falling in love with a plant that looks pretty.

They're not an annual. I live in a Zone 2b area in Alberta Canada and I have numerous Heucheras thriving. I love them. They are so cheerful to see when the snow melts. It's an instant hit of color after the long dark winter. And right now they are looking fantastic, even though I moved some of them this summer, and some of them are four years old, or older. They definitely don't like the hot sun. Mine do best with morning sun and shade in the afternoon.

I know this is really late, but your plant has the same coloring as my "Carmel" coral bells that I picked up on clearance at Lowe's. The leaves look like they are a different shape though, almost oak-leaf like.
I like that someone else said it might be "buttered rum"...this time of year, that makes the plant so much more appealing. I love the butterscotchy-caramely-warm-themed names.

The oak like leaves show that it is a Heucherella not a Heuchera. So far this one is doing great - now the big test of overwintering.

Did you decide who it is? I did find Heucherella 'Buttered Rum' here at a local nursery. Lost it last winter, so happy to have it again.

Heuchera all look good and hope for the best this winter. Did get some sand mixed in so, time will tell.

So far the color has not changed much, so hard to tell. It looks different then my Brass Lantern , nothing like your Buttered Rum. It looks somewhat like some Autumn Cascade pictures but shows no sign of trailing yet. Hopefully when it gets Fall color or Spring color I will be able to take a better guess.
