All About Sassafras

By Sharon

Do you like gumbo? How about hot tea? There's nothing better on a cold winter day than hot soups and hot drinks. How does sassafras enter into the picture? Climb up the mountain with Aunt Bett and me and we'll tell you.

Welcome to ATP, Tink.

A lot depends on the area where you live and if they will grow well there, but if you haven't found a source for sassafras near your area, you might try this link for Arbor Day trees:

http://www.arborday.org/shoppi...

Or Nature Hills which is an online nursery:

I don't know much about the Mayhaw, but I'd look online again for places near you that might have it.

I know you're going to enjoy ATP.

Found this story again while researching sassafras trees and enjoyed reading it all over again!

We had to have our old oak tree removed in January because it was hollow inside and ever since then we were trying to decide whether to leave the space open or try to grow a new tree. I said that if we put a new tree in its place, it had to be one with great fall foliage.

Well as luck would have it, there is a sassafras tree about 2 feet tall growing right in front of the stump of the old oak tree. After reading about the beautiful fall color sassafras provides and the other many wonderful properties of it, I think it is the tree for us.

I think nature had a hand in making the decision for us. On second thought, maybe it was my dear departed dad. He always said "sassyfras" too!

Thank you Sharon. I am anxious for it to get big and grow little starts so I can try to make some tea Smiling

Those roots make the most beautiful red tea and so very good. You'll love it.
