Background history:

'Ruffled Strawberry Parfait' is a dormant tetraploid created by Brother Charles Reckamp (of The Society of the Divine Word in Techny, Illinois) and was introduced in 2003 by Roy Klehm. Brother Charles was one of the premier tetraploid breeders in the United States and created over 240 daylilies (many of them using the name 'Heavenly' in the cultivar name). He passed away at 91 years old in 1996. His daylilies have been introduced by Klehm & Son Nursery since 1975 (using the Reckamp-Klehm hybridizer notation name).

Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Ruffled Strawberry Parfait')

I have had this daylily for 5 years and I always look forward to its bloom because it is later when there are not so many daylilies blooming. It is a rather slow grower for me in my zone. I still only have 3 fans after 5 years. This year I had a bud count of 10. It receives partial shade during the day and that could possibly account for the low bud count and increase. I can concur that it is fertile both ways. It looked wonderful in my garden this year.

I've had RUFFLED STRAWBERRY PARFAIT for 3 years. Started from a single fan and is now 4. I have it growing in a spot that is shaded until about noon during the summer then gets full afternoon sun. Like Cindy said, it's a very late blooming variety; in fact I think it's the last thing to bloom in the garden unless there are rebloom scapes. It's a fully dormant plant that is slow to emerge but grows wonderfully once it does. Blooms seem to open with no problems but the latter ones have a less pronounced edge than the first. I just went and counted (posting from the back porch today because it's GORGEOUS outside!) and I had 3 scapes with bud counts of 16, 14, and 11. It's pod fertile for me but given how late it is I've not tried the pollen. Does seem to have decent rust resistance but I generally try to keep that under control so I haven't truly tested it.

If memory serves its the parent of some of Polston's toothy beauties so that edge does get passed on.
