I was at the store yesterday and happened upon the houseplants section. (Okay, okay, I actually asked where it was Hilarious! ) I found some REALLY great ones and had to restrain myself from buying everything. I ended up putting back a "lucky bamboo" plant, a hoya rosa (I was going to see if I end up winning a hoya in the October NARR), a croton (I don't like that it can cause dogs' throats to swell), a dracaena (which I really wanted), an ivy, and a couple of others that looked cute but were unmarked.

So what I did get were these:

Here they are a little more spread out:

Thumb of 2015-10-17/DogsNDaylilies/94393f

I should note that the prayer plant leaf up front was my doing, not a purchase. When I got home, it was the one casualty of the ride home and it had a tiny piece of leaf stem, so I thought I would atleast give it a shot to grow.

I also have this one in the Plant ID forum because it is a NOID:

Thumb of 2015-10-17/DogsNDaylilies/d8ed1f Thumb of 2015-10-17/DogsNDaylilies/54770a

(If you know what it is, though, please let me know and I will close that thread!)

Here's my latest acquisitions in list form:

Fittonia argyroneura "Juanita"
Calathea roseo picta "Medallion"
Maranta leuconeura "Red" (Prayer Plant)
Cyanotis kewensis "Teddy Bear Vine"
Dizygotheca elegantissima "Castor" (False Aralia)
Asplenium nidus "Bird's Nest Fern"
NOID succulent

UPDATE: As of early 2017, the Prayer Plant, NOID succulent, Schefflera (umbrella plant), and the Bird's Nest Fern are all doing really well. I lost the Fittonia after something of a little experiment with it (when it would get dry, it would suddenly fall over, and then, within hours of watering it, it would spring back up, it was quite marvelous! I did this a few times, once on purpose and other times because I would procrastinate on watering. Well, one time I waited a little too long and it dried beyond recovery). The Teddy Bear vine finally gave up the ghost late 2016; from what I understand, teddy bear plants are difficult plants to grow, and mine proved it. It seemed that whenever I watered it, it was too much, and whenever I let it dry out, it was too much; I never could determine its precise water scheduling needs. The False Aralia perished because it was behind a few other plants (it likes darker spaces) and I didn't realize the soil was drying out so quickly--compared to the surrounding plants--until it was too late.

Wow, what a great haul ... looks like you are going to have a lovely indoor landscape through the winter months! I almost bought one of those Teddy Bear (Cyanotis) plants recently but talked myself out of it.

I'm not sure what your noid succulent is but it reminds me a bit of Echeveria, possibly Echeveria (Echeveria harmsii)

That echevatia looks pretty. It's a little different in the shape of the leaves, but maybe it's a relative?

Not to talk you back into it, but if it's still there, you might want to pay it a little visit at the store. Maybe just a little meet-and-greet just to say 'hi' and see where things go from there... Rolling my eyes. Hilarious!

I keep going over to touch the fuzzy leaves on my teddy bear vine. I absolutely love it so far. If I don't kill it, it might become one of my favorite indoor houseplants.

Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Well, I think it was at Lowes where I saw it a week or so ago but there was only one and I doubt it's still there. I don't know when I'll get by there again, I've got a busy week this week and I'm heading to the Orlando airport very early Saturday morning for a trip to Texas. Whistling I'll be back very late Monday night but maybe one day next week I'll have to stop in at Lowes for something or other and I'll just pass by that area and glance over to see if I spot one; if I do I'm sure it will jump in my cart ... I'll keep you posted! Green Grin!

It's there a support group (or, rather, an anti-support group) for compulsive houseplant purchasers? I need it.

That said, I just got some STELLAR deals on plants at Lowe's and Walmart!!! Lovey dubby Lovey dubby Lovey dubby

Pictures to come soon!

I just stopped at the Lowes near my house and they had the teddy bear vine on clearance for only $3!!!! I paid $15 for my other one. Granted, the more expensive one is a little filter, but it's the same pot.

I'll post pictures of everything in a little while, there were so many great deals today I nearly bought the department, lol! Hilarious!

Yes, I can, but I can't. That's incredible. A few weeks ago, while out of town, I found some pots of calibrachoa marked down from $10.98 to $1, so yes I can believe it. But, the hoya hanging basket for $1, that's priceless. They are usually $14.98 for the large hanging basket and $9.98 for the small one. Thumbs up

Alright, guys, you aren't going to believe some of these, so I'm going to post some pictures of the prices.

From Lowe's:
Teddy Bear Vine - $3...........................................................(it's smaller than one I paid $15 from at another store, but still...)

LOST late 2016 (the larger one I got from another store is almost dead at the beginning of 2017, this type of plant is VERY difficult to care for, it seems.).

Fishtail Hoya - $1
Thumb of 2015-11-04/DogsNDaylilies/6f5edc Thumb of 2015-11-04/DogsNDaylilies/91ff29
UPDATE: This plant is doing well as of beginning of 2017. I had a number of new leaves in 2016.)

Succulents in a nice ceramic planter - $5
Any comments to confirm IDs on these would be great!!! I suspect that the two in the back are Pencil Cactus and Finger Jade (Gollum), but I have yet to come up with guesses for the other two. Shrug!
Thumb of 2015-11-04/DogsNDaylilies/3a48e2 Thumb of 2015-11-04/DogsNDaylilies/82eb13
LOST summer or fall of 2016. I purchased a plant last year that was infested (whitefly?...creates little white sacs in the elbows of plant stems) and this pot was near it, so I had to put it outside so the infestation wouldn't spread while I figured out what to do. Uultimately, I lost the plants in it. (I think because of temperature-related reasons, though--see Ponytail Palm for explanation.)

Bromeliad (probably some cultivar of Bromeliad Vriesa --please let me know if you know what it is!) - $1
Thumb of 2015-11-04/DogsNDaylilies/743411 Thumb of 2015-11-04/DogsNDaylilies/21d806
This one survived well, but it was rather dull with it's perpetual spent flower (brown and paper-husk-like) and, to my understanding, it wasn't likely to ever have another bloom so, since it didn't have any pups and required purified (read: purchased) water from the store, I decided it wasn't worth the highly-desirable and rare high-light spot in my house, so I pitched it. I feel a little guilty about it, but I wanted to use that space for something a little prettier. I wish I had given it to someone who had more high-light areas in their home.

Ponytail Palm - $3
Thumb of 2015-11-04/DogsNDaylilies/7d5879
LOST Fall 2016. This loss was really sad. This plant was doing wonderfully until I overwatered it at one point and realized my mistake. The base felt slightly squishy all of a sudden one day; so I immediately put it outside, thinking that the wind/fresh air and a few extra hours of sunlight for a couple of weeks would help balance the moisture and prevent rot. Unfortunately, I kept procrastinating with bringing the outdoor plants inside (the unseasonably warm fall made it easy to justify leaving them outside) and we had a few nights where temperatures suddenly dipped low, which I think is what finally did it in.

Lucky Bamboo - $5
I had to pull out several stalks of bamboo that looked bad and I suspect there might be some root rot. I'll see if it comes around, but if I lose the plant(s), atleast I have a really pretty red planter and some rocks I can sanitize and reuse...I could see some air plants and/or succulents in there in the future if my bamboo dies.
Thumb of 2015-11-04/DogsNDaylilies/55c989
Surprisingly, this one is holding on well as of early 2017. After a few weeks of being watered with tap water, I discovered that water softened with potassium chloride leaves a chalky residue at the base of the plant and might account for the 1-2 stems I lost. Otherwise, this one is doing extremely well--not what I expected, considering it was not in good shape when I purchased it.

Subtotal for all 6 plants (plus the nice planters that came with some of them): $18

Walmart next...

Score! The mixed pot looks like it has Euphorbia tirucalli, Crassula ovata cultivar (like 'Gollum' or 'Hobbit,) Crassula undulatifolia (a synonym of arborescens? I don't remember,) and the tall one could be Graptopetalum/Graptoveria, something in that realm.

Wow, what a great haul at really phenomenal prices!! I never see any good deals on the clearance racks at our Lowes or Home Depot. They mark stuff down to $5 and $3 that are almost totally dead ... the racks sit out in direct, hot sun and the plants are shriveled and no amount of water will probably revive them because they are so far gone. I did get a wicker basket of succulents for a couple of bucks at Lowes a couple of years ago and most of the plants in it survived but those deals are few and far between here in my local stores. DND, you really got some amazing plants!! Hurray!

Thank you, Tiff! I'll research those CV's and see if descriptions match up!

Now for the Walmart deals I got...

Carnosa 'Rubra' hoya (Krimson Princess) - $3.49
Thumb of 2015-11-04/DogsNDaylilies/3f64d0
UPDATE: This poor plant suffered from a bout of whitefly infestation when I ordered a gardenia last year. It was put outside and sprayed down, but was left outside and suffered when temperatures started dropping into the freezing range at night. I sprayed it again and brought it inside where it was doing well until just a few days ago (mid-January) when it started developing white sacs in the branch elbows again. It's been sprayed and, fingers crossed, will stop having these whitefly(?) infestations. Otherwise, it's doing well.

Succulents in magnetized/designer mini planter (there are two) - $1.99 each ($3.98 total)
My best guesses for IDs on these are Torch Plant (Aloe aristata) and Haworthia (Haworthia attenuata f. clariperia)...any confirmations, disagreements, or alternate possibilities are welcome!!)
Thumb of 2015-11-04/DogsNDaylilies/637457 Thumb of 2015-11-04/DogsNDaylilies/ed91dd
As of early 2017, these are doing great. Both are bigger now. The aloe is slightly etoliated, but both are happy and have doubled in size.

Sansevieria - $0.74
I think this is the 'bird's nest' variety - am I right? I just got one or two of these from Tiffany (purpleinopp) in the mail that were much bigger, but I loved how cute this was and for less than a buck, I thought it would be a great add to somewhere small and darker in my house.
Thumb of 2015-11-04/DogsNDaylilies/e6e551
UPDATE: This plant is doing extremely well as of early 2017.

Panda Plant - $0.74
This was unlabeled, but I'm nearly certain it's a Panda Plant (Kalanchoe tomentosa), I just don't know what variety. I don't think it's the Chocolate Soldier one listed in our database, but if any of you know, please feel free to chime in!
Thumb of 2015-11-04/DogsNDaylilies/85b481 Thumb of 2015-11-04/DogsNDaylilies/ab6855
This plant did well for awhile and then I think it dried out. I am trying to recover it from the green parts that were still on the plant, but nothing is taking root so far. We'll see...

Dracaena 'Limelight' - $1.19
Thumb of 2015-11-04/DogsNDaylilies/1cb9a8
This plant Is doing well. It's in a room of the house I rarely go into, so it's experienced drought-like conditions on more than one occasion, which resulted in brown leaf tips, but otherwise it is doing great.

Dracaena Fragrans - $0.74
Thumb of 2015-11-04/DogsNDaylilies/bfbd90
As of early 2017, this plant is doing well. I keep forgetting to water it because it is the only plant in that room (and it's in a darker area), so it has some brown leaf tips, but it does very well despite the occasional neglect.

Baby Jade - $0.74
...which I suppose is different from regular Jade (which I also have...but nearly killed by accident this year)
Thumb of 2015-11-04/DogsNDaylilies/bae357

Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) - $1.74
This appears to be a different variety of Aloe Vera than what we have in the plant database...does anyone agree? I'm probably going to add it.

The aloe is doing okay as of early 2017. I try not to overwater it because that's how I lost previous aloe plants. This one seems to be doing okay, but I lost the smaller shoots late last year and, more recently, I think it got mad at me with the lack of water and it leaned over and started looking unhealthy...but then two, fresh green shoots popped up shortly after, so I'm not sure what to make of that.

Pilea 'Aluminum' (Aluminum Plant) - $0.74
Thumb of 2015-11-04/DogsNDaylilies/e8df98
LOST mid-2016. This plant is very sensitive to drought and didn't like a prolonged period of lack of water due to busy-ness/procrastination.

Peperomia 'Belly Button' - $0.74
Thumb of 2015-11-04/DogsNDaylilies/dc3d85
This plant is doing well for the most part, but is in an area that apparently gets less light than it wants, because it is completely elongated (etoliated) and looks very different from what you see here...it looks much more like a hanging plant now, but otherwise it is quite happy--green, fuzzy vines and all.

Peperomia 'Golden Gate' - $0.74
Thumb of 2015-11-04/DogsNDaylilies/3f9328
This plant is a ROCK! Despite being in a room I almost never go into and experiencing drought-like conditions as a result, it is doing excellent and put on a great deal of growth.

Succulent Planter - $2.50
I think the jade in this one is the actual jade, not the baby jade, and I'm guessing the panda plant is the same CV as the other, larger one I have, but unknown CV....the other one I just don't know...I would just say it's an echeveria of some sort. Can anyone else confirm/suggest IDs?
Thumb of 2015-11-04/DogsNDaylilies/88cb5c
The jade is doing well. The panda plant dried up and the other succulent rotted out; go figure. Most of last year I had this pot in a room I almost never go into and it was on a shelf where it wasn't getting much sunlight--direct or indirect--at all (although, depending on the month, it might get about 10 minutes of direct sunlight before being cast into mostly-dark conditions again). It would seem that only the jade enjoyed those conditions.

Total for the 13 items (15 plants total...plus the nice planters on a couple of them) from Walmart is: $18.08

(I didn't realize I was so consistent in my plant purchase totals Hilarious! Clearly, I got more plants for $18 at Walmart than Lowe's, but I think I scored almost equally well at both places!)

Although I do not go there often, I have yet to see any clearance sales at our HD here. I think there is one nursery who has the monopoly for plants sold at HD. Whatever does not sell after a time are removed and replaced with other plants from the said nursery. I believe the arrangement is that what plants go through the cash register for the nursery is what they are paid by HD. So simply said, what does not sell, the nursery takes back. So no plants to remain to be discounted!

Rainbow, I've read other people say the same things about their local big box stores, which is a shame because it costs money to process out the plants (having an employee write what didn't sell, etc...) and maybe even to ship them back if that's how the arrangement works. I purchased these plants along with plastic trays (granted, the store doesn't make a ton of money on those) and some extra planting soil for succulents. I almost purchased some small rocks to go along with them for replanting, but decided to do that on a future visit because I just purchased similar-but-slightly-larger rocks from them recently.

It's like companies who sell printers...they sell the printers for dirt cheap because they make the money off of the add-ons (ink, paper, etc.)
