A question--I have potted up a few proliferations and they have been growing in small pots in my greenhouse for about a month. Freeze up will be happening soon. Do I need to bring in the prolifs or can I put them in the ground in the pots? What do people in my zone recommend?

I usually plant mine in pots until they develop roots, then plant in the garden in the fall - some live, some don't. Even then, they seem very slow growing, even slowing growing than my seedlings.

This year, I have a group of very late prolifs from some late bloomers. So this year I have them in a pot, and after it gets cold and stays cold, I will try to bring them into my garage for the winter and see if this gives them a boost before planting them in the gardening the spring. My garage is insulated, and unless I leave the doors open, the temps stay reasonable - pop will get cold but not freeze if it is off the floor. I also have some south facing windows. I have successfully overwintered some flowers and some herbs in there, but the one time I tried to overwinter some late arriving day lilies from the auction ( expected them the next spring) I had major issues with aphids and rust. Hence the delay bringing this pot of prolifs inside, to try to prevent this.

But this is my first time trying this - I have no clue if I will be successful. I just keep experimenting....

I am tempted to put mine directly in the ground in the pots so I don't disturb any tender roots. I have no idea how many roots have formed but I don't want to risk them by checking. I guess I won't know unless I try. Maybe I will bring some in and put some out as an experiment. Then I will know for another year. This is my first year knowing about proliferations and I think it is cool.

I love prolifs too. I think you have a good idea about doing half and half. Especially if you have more than one prolif from the same plant. Be sure to post next spring how your experiment goes

This is my report on overwintering my proliferations. All the ones I put in the ground in pots did not survive the winter. I guess their roots are not developed enough. I sunk the pots down in the soil as if they were planted there. The ones I grew on the window sill in the kitchen all winter are now growing into healthy plants as I transplanted them outside after the last frost. So next year, any prlifs I grow will winter inside. If I had a garage like yours Jan, I would use that. However, my garage is detached and freezes as does our greenhouse.

Thank you for updating this! I have my first two prolifs already in pots. They will go to a friend's garden and I hope they will be strong enough for when winter comes!

My one prolif from last year wintered over in our house and it too is now growing happily outside in a pot. I will put it in the ground in September.

I just bought a new daylily; Green Flutter and it has 2 crazy prolifs. One is actually a prolif looking thing with a scape growing out the middle.

Now a dumb question. Daylilies cannot replicate through seeds, but do they replicate through prolifs??

Yes, it should be a clone of the mother plant. A great way to increase your daylily stock. One daylily can produce more than one proliferation. In fact, one scape can produce more than one! Hurray!

I often see prolifs on Spider form daylilies, but I've gotten prolifs from all forms. I don't know if certain cultivars are more prone to producing prolifs or not?

It'd be a great thing for people to put in evaluations!

Mine are not spider, they are all "oldies", I found proliferations on Spartacus Adorned (tet), Pagan Ritual (tet), Taffetà Mist (dip).

I did too, Sabrina, but mine were super tiny when I got them, so it's not a surprise. I'm surprised that any from that vendor bloomed!
