Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Real Wind')

This is one of my won't-be-without DLs. It blooms reliably and increases well. I've had it in
three different gardens!

I've already posted a photo from my garden.

This was one of my original purchases when I first started collecting daylilies . It is a very hardy, average increasing daylily ....blooms are of a consistant size and color year after year .It has an orange yellow throat which is a nice change from the predominent green throat on most daylilies . I have loved this daylily since I got it and will continue to always grow it in my zone 6a gardens .

I received this Daylily in 2009 as a gift from a friend who told me it was the first Daylily she ever purchased. In my garden it was slow to increase and took a couple years to establish reliable beautiful blooms. It has now grown into a lovely clump which I moved and divided this fall. I hope it will not be pouting when bloom season starts.

I have had this daylily since 2003 and it always puts on a great show. I moved it to my northern garden location last summer which is a zone 4, so we will see how it does there. Always did wonderful in zone 5. I never ever bothered to take stats on it but I would say by the way it bloomed that it exceeded its registered stats. It is also a fairly good increaser. I could never get a pod to form on it but once in a while the bees set a pod on it for me.

One of my original purchases as well. Performs well in sun or shade, doesn't fade even in full sun. It's one of those stellar performers in the garden.

I've had 'Real Wind' here in Zone 4 for many years, it has always done reasonably well although I suspect it would prefer a little more TLC than it gets to do really well, but it always flowers.

Real Wind has been a great performer in my zone 6a garden for over seventeen years. This year is no exception. What I particularly like about Real Wind is it blooms late mid season and persists well after most of my other daylilies have quit. It has a beautiful bloom; I agree with the gold throat comment made by signet. It is a great clump former sending up many 27 inch scapes held well above the foliage. Its branching and bud count are not great by today's standards. Most of my scapes had two-way branching with an average bud count of 7.

I've had Real Wind since 2014. It's always been a very reliable bloomer but the past few years it has really put on a show. I have it planted under a tree so it is fairly shaded. That may be why the flowers are typically smaller than the registration but can vary from year to year. It also blooms midseason for me now whereas in the beginning it flowered mid-late like registered.

I love a lot of Wild's plants and have several in my garden. But Real Wind is the standout performer of the bunch. The flowers are just lovely and the scapes are nice and tall. Highly recommended!

I have had Real Wind for many years. Originally purchased at Seawright Daylilies, I think I've had this plant since the late 90's. It lives in a crowded part of Upper Daylily Hill, with lots of competition but it holds it's own. Usually blooming ML, it's a beautiful, welcome burst of color as things are winding down. It has a very distinctive face, that can't be mistaken for any other Daylily.

Last year was the first year that I kept any kind of track.
In 2021 RW bloomed from July 8- August 4, with at least 33 flowers. It must have enjoyed the cooler, rainier summer because this year…
2022, RW bloomed July 15 -August 2 with only 20 flowers. Heat and drought were not it's friend.

I bought Real Wind in the spring of 2020 from Oakes Daylilies. I fell in love with the colors of the bloom, which Oakes describes on its website as "creamy orange sherbet with a raspberry sauce eye."

Unfortunately, Real Wind did not do well here. It did bloom that first spring and the next, but it struggled and quickly developed rust. It never increased or put out more than a few blooms, so Real Wind left my garden. I don't recommend it for southern growers.

2023 update…another bad year for Real Wind. Blooming from July 13 to the 30, it only produced 15 flowers. That's worse than last year! I'm hoping that with the rainy summer we had in 2023, Real Wind will rally. I'll try to keep track of where it is and if it needs to be divided.
