Does anyone have any experience starting this from seed? I bought a packet of seeds when we were out in South Dakota last fall and would love to grow this, as it is native here... somewhere... I actually have no idea how to recognize it.

Also, although I did ask this on the plant database forum, does anyone know if Hierochloe hirta (which is what the packet that I purchased said, common name Northern Sweetgrass) is the same as Hierochloe odorata ?

Hi Cinda -- never did get an answer; I tried planting the seeds, both by winter sowing and just in a pot outdoors once the weather warmed up a bit, and didn't get any sprouts at all. I suspect the seed was old or something. I think I might try growing a couple of plants next summer if I can find a source. I did see it listed on a website a while back, now I'm not sure which one -- maybe Mountain Valley Growers?

It supposedly grows up here, my former mother-in-law first told me about the local Native Americans using it for making baskets. So many interesting things, so little time...

Edited to say: Mountain Valley Growers does sell it... https://www.mountainvalleygrow...

I sent out a half-dozen packets (of sweetgrass) on my autumnal give away. Only one reported success from seed.

I wintersowed the remaining 4-500 seeds and got eight to germinate.

Now that I have plugs, I can divide and send plugs on to needy growers.

I grew it this year from seed acquired from Prairie Moon Nursery. It requires a cold period and would be a good candidate for winter sowing. I had pretty good success.

I could not start it from seed this year in my greenhouse. I read it has a really low germination rate. It was hard to track down but fortunately I did find a greenhouse that had it in plant form.
