Hello everyone. I recently was given the responsibility of the greenhouse at a university. Unfortunately, I do not know much about plants, and not all the plants were identified. Please help me ID these plants so I can try to give them the proper care.

The palm could be Phoenix roebelenii but Palms can be very similar and difficult to identify. It surely needs a larger pot with fresh compost.

The third one also looks like Billbergia but Aechmea is possible.

Thank you JRsbugs. That helps a lot. I'm a little overwhelmed with the greenhouse task (in addition to my general work), but I hope this forum will help me understand plant care so the plants can flourish.
Currently, many plants are not looking too well. The cacti have been over watered, the plants have been shaded all winter, and there was a fault in the heating/cooling system the froze some plants to death this winter.
I hope all your help will let the plants return to their rightful glory.

I think the last one is Dieffenbachia

Looking after plants in pots is a lot of work. The palm looks like it needs more humidity, but it's more likely due to the size of the palm in a too small pot that it's not getting enough water and nutrients. The roots are likely filing the pot and water will run straight down the sides of the pot. If it is Phoenix roebelenii it can take some neglect but it needs room to grow and food.

It's best to use a soil based compost, artificial mediums become caked. Most plants in the wild grow in soil. Artificial composts are only suitable for annuals. Growing in pots requires added grit or small stones, I find leaf mould added makes a good mix. If you can get river soil that is best as it usually has a grittier texture.

We have one in the database named Dieffenbachia seguine .. they all look different.

Dieffenbachia picta is a synonym of Dieffenbachia seguine, so is D. maculata.

I have always been enamored with Dieffenbachia but have never actually had one. The love affair has to do with their version of calcium oxalate - a whole bunch of microscope needle-shaped crystals . What's not to love about that? I tried to kill my botany teacher in college by switching the lettuce in his sandwich for Dieffenbachia leaves. Luckily, he was a good botanist.

I discovered on my own that taro and its relatives store their calcium oxalate in much the same way (choke choke). Pickle or cook your taro before eating, please!

Thankfully, not all plants store their sugars in this way. Calcium oxalate laced strawberries! Ahhhhhh!

I had a Dieffenbachia many years ago, it was a spectacular plant. One of my cats took a liking to chewing the leaves, then became like a druggie. I soon found out it has this effect on cats so the plant had to go!
