Anyone growing morning glory vines? They do quite well in containers, and they can be grown indoors over the winter.

I've thought about trying them indoors a number of times. I have no luck with the fancy ones outside...I never even get a bloom before winter gets them.

They'd need to be under lights wouldn't they? in the winter...

You can place a container near the window, and also supplement light using a lamp. Just be sure to have a "short-day" daylength to trigger flower production.

I have a MG growing in a container on my balcony right now- I've gotten 3 blooms from it But I noticed that the leaves are small and sparse. Is that common in a container grown MG? I love the idea I can bring it in for the winter..is there anything special I would need to do to make that transition?

I really like that morning glory, Chris, wow what a saturated red color! Do you have a leaf photo to share, and a side view of the flower to show the sepals (the green leafy pointy structures around the base of the red flower)?

I am uncertain how many folks in the US grow MGs in containers. I grow most of my MGs in containers, as does probably a large percentage of hobby growers in Japan.

I augment natural light by using one of those fluorescent tubes with the shield that you can buy at Home Depot or Lowes or your favorite independent hardware store. I set the timer to give 8 or 9 hours of light. Your plant might keep flowering indoors when you bring it inside. If not, you can always start another one from a seed and enjoy the winter with these flowers.

I received MG seeds from a gardening friend (DG & Cubits) and sowed them at the end of March. In 3 1/2 weeks I had beautiful blooms. Mine are in a container because I was concerned about planting them in the ground, worried they'd become invasive like Ipomoea cordatotriloba which has become extremely invasive in my garden, taking over everything in sight!

Joseph, I'll try to take a few more pictures..I have a couple of places that I think will wind up blooming on it, but it took a hit from the cold we have and the leaves aren't looking pretty! I'm going to leave it out as tomorrow will be around 80 and I'm hoping the warm will perk it back up.

That's IF the squirrel will leave the planter alone! I think he's either eating my petunias (he destroyed the marigolds in my window box) or he's hiding nuts in the potting soil.. stupid squirrel

Lin: This avatar photo I have is Blue Silk. It is a knock-out flowering vine! You have some nice looking vines by the looks of them in your photos.

Chris: It suddenly got very warm here in Delaware too. I am sure the weather change will spur the vines on to make a few more flowers. I am hoping the warm weather will last long enough for the seeds to fully develop on the vines.

Tee: thanks for the comment! Try growing an Ipomoea purpurea, they are fairly easy to grow and flower readily indoors.
