The reason I originally didn't keep track of my semp names is because I didn't want those ugly labels sticking all over my gardens. For my birthday my DH got me a label maker and I've been making labels like crazy! For my sedum and semps I got some plastic markers, spray painted them black and stuck labels on them. They should blend in pretty well in the gardens and not stick out like a sore thumb.

Oh Chris, I really like those. Wonder if we could buy them already black? How well does the label maker stuff hold up? I am really liking that idea. Right now my bed looks like a forest of plant labels.

I've never seen black ones. I used the Krylon paint for plastic so I'm sure that will hold up. One person said she has had the labels in her garden for at least 5 years and they still look great. I'll have to take a couple of pictures showing the labels in the gardens. They worked just like I hoped!

I will give that a try, sounds pretty good to me.

One thing about painting your labels is that the paint should help protect the plastic from UV, which means that they will last longer.

I agree. It's sure a time consuming process to re-do all the labels though!

I have seen the black, but never noticed the white lettering.

I use a Brother P-Touch label maker: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000W3V38S/ Its really a nice printer. Probably overkill for what I need it for though. I got this one because of the many different widths of labels it can use.

You can get all different colored tapes for making labels, most with black printing. But I got black tape with white printing. I use the 1/2" width for these labels. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000W3V38S/

Here are the EON zinc markers I am starting to use this year. I used the P-touch label printer.

this is not a great pic of ;the bed but you can see the rock label. paint pens come in different colors. i have found the generic ones from office supply stores not to last. the ones i have bought from craft stores seems to last.

I have tried to mark my plants but haven't had much luck so far. I bought the metal eon markers but think the size I have too big. I have a Brother P-touch label maker which I just love but I don't use it to mark all my plants. I like the window blind markers and if you bury most of it including the writing you won't have fade but my Chickies think they are fun to pull out of the ground so after marking a lot of plants I came outside to see them laying all over the ground. I take pics and notes on the name and location in my gardens in an online journal but I still may not be entirely sure if I have it right.

Holly, maybe in your rock wall you could place a maker under the edge of the rock by the plant, where it can't be seen but easily retrievable when needed?
I really like the painted rock idea for your rock wall also. The small stone can be placed beside the plant.

I might try slipping a tag in the rock crevice the chickies patrol that wall pretty good and have really put a dent in the slugs. I will take pics and try to keep track of what plant goes into what area of the wall as well.

Maybe I will try gluing a rock to a label and stake. I think in a pot, burying most of it is a good idea.

I've just started using the Mini EON plant markers and I love them, but they do look large with some plants. I wish I had started my labeling with the black tape. When I purchased my Brother label maker, it came with a roll of the white outdoor tape. I was so excited to make labels that I forgot I had wanted to make them black like Lynn and Chris's.

I love the painted rocks, but I would have to use boulders to label my plants because my grandson's would move them.

I really like the idea of the painted rocks for my flower beds. Will have to go out to the rock pile and see what I can use.

I know twit has had really great results with burying a label in the pot. If something pulls out the stake you still have one buried in the pot.

I also bury a small plastic tag with each plant. I print it out, put the tape on the small white plastic marker and then bury with the plant. Most of the time I get two markers out of one label by cutting them in half. I have also used blinds to bury names on. Any time they're under the soil, they will not fade. I recently dug up a label I placed with a rose bush 14 years ago. It was in perfect condition. You can also include the date planted when you bury the tag. It was fun to see the tag after all those years.
