I'm used to visitors in the greenhouse: butterflies, bees, red wasps, ants, spiders, lizards, and the occasional bird. I always assist them to leave unharmed. But I wasn't ready for this: a western coachwhip draped across the succulents. It was a lonnnng snake (4 - 5 ft.), but I knew it was't poisonous. After the initial shock, I didn't panic but ran to get the camera. I took a few photos, then got the broom and gently "uninvited" the interloper. These snakes are beneficial; nice to know they're around. I just didn't want to share my space with it all afternoon!

Wow, great photos!

EEK! All snakes (non venomous as well as the venomous variety) scare the beejeebies out of me but they are a part of nature and do have their place.

GrammaChar, thanks for the great photos! I have a new greenhouse. So far I'm seeing mice, rats, chipmunks, lizards and assorted insects but haven't had any snakes yet. I'm not a snake lover but I do leave them alone because I know they are very good to have around.

Welcome @GrammaChar I'm no fan of snakes, but I know they are part of the circle of life. I just would rather them circle in someone else's yard! Whistling

Nice! I have seen any bigger snakes this year, but maybe later on.

Well I got some help picking up debris in the yard yesterday. Some tasks are just better left to someone else if you can find good help.

Oh my...that looks like a REAL BAD good guy. I'd want him relocated....far, far away, like the next state over. Brave fellow to catch it bare-handed.

Lots braver than I am. I had made that fellow really, really angry earlier and he took cover under a screen covered with pots of seedlings that is elevated to discourage toad frogs from digging them out. Once he got there I figured he would stay until it got dark. However I wanted him off the premises, so I located someone that would remove him. It got really angry again. The fellow with the hands said it was the angriest he'd ever seen one. He did relocate him far enough away that I'm not likely to ever run across it again. He did have a tool to catch him with initially, but I didn't actually observe how he changed from the tool to his hands. Don't know why he did that, either. Later I was told that it never did calm down. It was still an angry, buzzing rattlesnake when it was released. I'm glad he stayed calm when I was walking by him thinking he was a dead limb that had fallen out of the tree overnight. I did that twice. It stayed calm until I meddled with it, then it got wired up in a big way. Wasn't much fun.

I'm sure the rattler will be much happier now, Donald! Not to mention you, also!

Good to know it wasn't your hands! Still can't imagine anyone picking up a venomous snake with bare hands. How would he know when to let it go? Thumbs down

The Long Branch area sort of west of Carbon. His family owns a little bit of acreage there and aren't keeping any livestock on it. I think he was angry enough to get just about anyone. A very touchy rattler. They aren't usually. Enjoy your walk! Even this one didn't do anything when he had the opportunity - before his temper got stirred up Sticking tongue out . I've often wondered how many times I've walked right by one without knowing it. I've walked by so many and didn't realize until I was already past them. I used clippers and cut the briers off a big one once. I'd tromped around in the briers for about three hours picking up limbs and cutting the briers and then I cut those over him. It never moved until I used a pick handle on it. It's a good thing they don't have the personality of a prairie race or rat snake. There'd be a lot more bites.
