It was a bit too warm for the earliest bulbs, but some things looked quite good this year. Unfortunately, we are now getting freezes as the tulips get into full swing.

Ara is an earlier one that lasted a long time.


British Gamble has such a large bloom that the rain sometimes batters it, but it has held up quite well this year. Wish its blooms were more above the foliage.





Serola is at peak now.


Full Throttle has color that lasts a long time.


Sentinel blooms above the foliage, but the large flower is vulnerable to bad weather.

Gorgeous display! Ara and Golden Echo I've grown a while and both are among my favorites. Just planted British Gamble and Sentinal last fall and both have a couple of blooms open- your photos of the mature color are an excellent preview Those Tom Touce tulips are so bright- love that contrast of the yellow at the base!

Sabatini is a new one here.






Last year, I saw this cultivar blooming prolifically in late midseason. I thought it was Tahiti, which it was not, and unfortunately ordered that one (which isn't as sturdy). Is this perhaps Ascot? It's a light yellow.

Your photos of Sabatini convinced me I need to order that one this fall! Much more beautiful than the catalog photos convey.

That double looks like my Tahiti, but there are other similar varieties out there. Could the pale yellow you mentioned be Manly?

I got Sabatini last year from Dutch Grown, a newer source with good quality, good prices, and flexible quantities. However, I don't think they offer it this year. The Unknown I photographed in a subdivision last year, where several neighbors had it. It is a softer yellow than Tahiti, not so large, taller, and blooming a bit later. Usually, I am not a fan of doubles, but this one was sturdy and long lasting. It may very well be Ascot.

Sure looks like the one I bought as Tahiti. Mine is not very large, but then I am in So. Cal. It's the only one that bloomed for me this year.

Note that Sabatini becomes more yellow as it ages (white on perianth diminishes). However, it is a very luminescent yellow, a pleasing color to me.

Here is the Tahiti that I got. It was not like the double I found last year in a subdivision. As I examine it, I think that the source (in this case, Van Bourgondien) did not send me Tahiti, but some other double. Disgusting! While the cultivar sent is a striking cut flower, the stems are weak and thus it is almost useless as a landscape item. Looks like Apotheose.

I think you're right, that is a crummy thing that happens all too frequently with Dutch bulbs - they substitute similar looking varieties. It causes much frustration for serious collectors and trying to id them.

Very hard freeze here in southern Ohio tonight. I'd rather see them in the garden, but better than frozen.

Neither of these is a favorite of mine in the garden (stems are a bit lax, and By George doesn't like heat).

Pink-cupped are mainly Chromacolor (I think). Light yellow I am sure is By George.

Tulips unfortunately are burning now in above normal temps, after much below just several days ago.

Beauty of Spring is a soft yellow. A favorite Darwin Hybrid, but it does vary a bit with different batches of bulbs.



Parrots are glamorous, though a bit overdone.




Grand Perfection is initially a creamy yellow and red, but changes to red and white:

A Triumph mixture that is almost bloomed out now. I don't like mixtures without names. The bicolor is Gavota, recurrent from several years ago.

Stunning displays and photos! Do you do anything to encourage your tulips to return? Has Gavota bloomed reliably every year?

I have had some Gavota last for 4 or 5 years. But after a few years, not with the same numbers. Beauty of Spring has been offered for the past few years by K. Van Bourgondien (wholesale), whose lots sometimes have a few bad bulbs (though Customer Service cheerfully gives credits for bad ones). This coming year, Dutch Grown is getting me a lot outside their regular catalog offerings since I already have an order from DG. Colorblends also has it.

Except for some Darwin Hybrids, Purissima, Negrita, and a few single Lates, my tulips are not very recurrent. They return best in a somewhat sandy soil.

Beautiful! So much color

New to me. Peruvian Scilla. It is suppose to be hardy to zone 6 with mulch. I found it on sale so I tried. WE had a mild winter it might not survive if we have a worst winter this year.

Very pretty and cool Cinta! I've always been intrigued by them.

I have some very late flowering daffs. Can any of you experts help identify them? I'd like to avoid ordering bulbs of plants we already have!

Lovely daffodils Mika! #2 is the only one that looks familiar to me, possibly Yellow Cheerfulness. That extra petal filled double is beautiful
