So last year I started my "All in the Family" themed Daylily garden. So far, I have found daylilies that represent my children, nieces, nephew(s) and other people in the family. So far I have
LADY ELIZABETH
DARING DILEMMA (EMMA)
SUZY CREAM CHEESE
MISS AMELIA
GRACE & GRANDEUR
SCOUT HONOR
LITTLE MAGGIE
KANAI SENSEI (What are the chances of finding one with the name Kanai? This daylily has spurred our family on a journey that is ongoing, and so it is a super special addition to the garden Crossing Fingers! )

In addition, I plan to add
CAT DANCER
CHARLENE
CINDYS LACE
SILOAM JUNE BUG OR WEDNESDAYS CHILD

Still looking for something to represent my other 2 nephews Daniel and Makana. Crying

So anyways, last night I was going through all of the beautiful flower on the Crossview Gardens website and decided that it would be fun to have another themed garden called "Fruits & Vegetables." There are so many strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, mango, eggplant and I am sure more that I haven't even discovered yet. Yep, here is my fruit and vegetable garden.... it produces all kinds of fruity flowers!!! Rolling on the floor laughing

So who else has themed daylily gardens? What is your inspiration behind it??

Hello Heidi great Idea... I have in planning stages and started collecting for a The thread "Native American Heritage Daylily Bed..." in Daylilies forum
Also have been thinking of plans for a flag pole with daylily bed with military/patriot named CVs.

I tip my hat to you.

My daughter has several themed beds for daylilies and hostas. One of her daylily beds is "Scary", such as Cinderella's Dark Side, Shades of Darkness, Devil's Workshop and Wicked Witch.

Ohhh, I like the "scary" bed idea!

I have a "red bed" where they are all red flowers.

Am working on a military/ patriotic bed.

May have to think about an "animal/ zoo" bed. Have heard about "oz" beds.

Apart from myMoon Garden (which among other plants has white irises and near-white daylilies), I don't have the luxury here for themed beds (lots of shade), short of tearing up our sole lawn (which also has a lot of shade).

But if I DID (this is a matter for consideration, as a move to Austin may be somewhere in our future, so I have been thinking about it a fair amount), the additional beds would have both daylilies and irises as well as shrubs and other perennials (I dislike monoculture), and they would have the following themes:

S & SF (the shortened title for "Science Fiction and Fantasy", a science fiction magazine); DH and I are both SF/F fans, so everything in there would relate in some way... and there are a surprising number of plants I currently have that could go into this bed. For starters, the daylily 'Stars My Destination' (named for an Alfred Bester novel that DH loves) and irises 'Katniss' (for 'The Hunger Games'), 'Purple People Eater' (song on the radio when I was a kid), 'Triffid' (for John Wyndham's 'The Day of the Triffids'), 'Total Recall' (we're Arnold fans too, but we both read the Phillip K. Dick story the movie was based on) and 'Alien Mist' (just because), and the Hosta 'Captain Kirk'. (There are lots more plants that can go in there, including many which I have not yet bought.)

A bed for my Daughter... would include the surviving (because it is rust resistant) daylily I bought for her as a child, 'Crystalline Pink', other daylilies, irises (including 'Afternoon Delight' which she especially wanted), and hosta bought with her in mind (as a child, or pertaining to her college and/or friends), and some roses (she likes roses a lot more than daylilies or irises Glare ) including 'Lady Emma Hamilton' (which she picked out to plant here).

A Memories bed (or beds), for people or childhood (related) memories... Potential plants include daylilies 'For Lois' (Lois is my sister, and the plant's tenure would be subject to rust resistance - it's a new plant here), 'April Fools' (someone's birthday), 'Sears Tower', 'December Wedding' and irises 'Lovely Lois' and 'Wedding Kiss'.

A Faith bed... Potential plants include daffodils 'Faith' and 'Rapture'; I will clearly have to work on the daylilies and irises. (Emmerich plants would seem obvious, but I am not a fan of most purple daylilies, both for the color itself, and also because the purple daylilies melt and slick here. I also like my daylilies taller.)

A bed for the Dogs (I hope to someday register daylilies or irises for them). Will include the iris 'Pink Puppy'.

A Polymerous bed nodding which may include unregistered seedling(s)

Thumb of 2016-04-14/Polymerous/89e662

Since DH loves the dark purple irises, I seem to be acquiring more than a few. I'm not sure what I would call that bed, but it would be a mix of dark purple irises with one other color, maybe whites (since I have a lot of those), maybe a very few pastels also thrown in. I could also put my very few purple daylilies into there, and maybe some of my lavender ones also.

Clearly some of these beds need both sunny and shady areas, and clearly some of the flower colors won't want to play together nicely. Rolling my eyes. It would be a challenge to make these beds work, but the result could be very satisfying...

I could go on and on in this vein... doing separate reblooming iris beds, late daylily beds, and (if we do eventually move to Austin) a California Dreaming bed (because I really don't want to leave here...).

How about some pictures of some of the plants in your themed beds?
Evaluating an iris seedling, hopefully for rebloom

I planted a small area easily viewed within my garden in memory of my sister using Shirley Goodness and Mercy, Stroll Over Heaven and Smile Again. We both loved to garden and always went plant shopping together and were back and forth to each others gardens regularly.

Folks please keep listing your themes it is so interesting to read them. I mostly select daylilies that appeal to me not for a theme with the small exception of the memory area.

I just stumbled on this thread and I'm hoping more people will contribute! I started a different thread asking for help with one of my themes and plan to start other threads later asking for help for my other themes. Currently, I'm working on the following themes:

*Sci-Fi (Star Trek, primarily)
*Patriotic
*Fantasy (elves, dragons, Lord of the Rings, *Harry Potter, Sword of Truth/Richard and Kahlan, etc)
*Lions and Tigers and Bears-oh my! (Not Wizard of Oz, though, just animal-related names)
*Phantom of the Opera
*Names of relatives

I doubt I'll ever have the space for themed beds, but I'm always surprised to run into daylilies named after songs and musicians I like. Panic in Detroit is one that has been mentioned here several times recently and I get earwormed every time!

Welcome! , Morchella!

I didn't know Panic in Detroit was a music group/band-- I'll have to go look it up, now. I live in the greater Detroit metro area and I always see non-MI people talking about or posting pictures of Panic in Detroit on here and I'm always amazed how non -MI people would be so enthralled with what seems like a MI-themed daylily. Knowing it's a band makes a little more sense.

I did some poking around, because I knew I'd seen some other David Bowie names before. You could actually put together a respectable collection just of Bowie songs: Panic in Detroit, Ziggy Stardust, Spiders From Mars, Life on Mars, and Space Oddity. (There's also a China Girl, but it was registered years before the song was recorded.)

I have a very simple theme...
Every daylily in my garden has to have some purple in it. However, to me purple is a broad spectrum...mauve to "blue" with all shades of magenta, grape, lilac, lavender, etc. in between!

I have what I call the grandchildren garden. They each got to go to a Daylily garden and pick and dig their own Daylily and then bring them back to my house and plant them. They each made a stepping stone with their name and age on it. We keep adding as we get more grandchildren and they are old enough to pick one out. There are 14 daylilies Lovey dubby We've added a fire pit for roasting marshmallows. I'll have to try a themed one now Smiling Thumbs up
