It's always so wonderful to see my yellow ground orchid blooming .. I started off with one lonely bulb and slowly it's being fruitful and multiplying. I was not really expecting any of my Bletilla to bloom this year since they got dug up last year and put in pots since I moved house. The blooms for all of them have been sparse this year but I expected that. They will be going in the ground in the Fall.

Would they tolerate being indoors for the winter do you think?

Absolutely .. they'll quit blooming by June and go dormant by mid summer.

You will have no problem growing them indoors during the winter. I tried it this past winter near a southern window and it kept sending up new stems that bloomed throughout the winter. Here is a bloom today:

Love this bletilla's performance and flowers! I got mine from Santa Rosa Gardens for less than 8.95.

Excellent question, Debbie! I've always coveted Bletilla but I'm a zone too cold for this beauty. Anyone know how much warmth and light they'd need indoors over winter?

Bletillas are very easy to grow in pots. Use a wide pot rather than a deep pot to plant them so that their rhizomes will have room to spread. It likes partial shade so a place like a southern window or patio door will be perfect for them. They are not hard to grow. When dangers of frost is over, you can take the pots outside to grow.My bletilla did not go dormant this past winter.

Thanks, kousa. I don't have much southern exposure and my sunlight levels are terribly low in the winter. Would grow lights be a recommendation?

I am fortunate to have a south face patio window/ door but also a grow light stand if need be. Thank-you Karen, Anne, and Cindy!

Cindy, I am not sure how well they will do under grow lights as I have never tried growing them that way. As long as you keep them on the dry side during winter, then you are ok. They don't like being overly wet.
