I do not know how or where to identify my iris i own quite a few .please help this is the first to bloom of probably a dozen different ones.

If you're going to ask for help in identifying your Iris, you are going to need better pictures. We need to see the entire bloom with pictures at different angles. Also need to know the height of the plant, whether it has purple-based foliage, and whether it's an early bloomer, mid-season or late bloomer. The more information you give us, the easier it is for us to give you some suggestions as to its identity.

What Mary Ann said. These people are great with helping with IDs but more info is needed. That being said, that's a pretty one.

, Robert ! As was stated, lots of good pictures are almost a must.......also notes on height.....measure from the top of the bloom, to the ground, foliage color......dark green ? Light green ? 'Stained" purple at the bottom (that's 'PBF"="purple based foliage") ? "Season of bloom" (is it the first iris in your garden to bloom ? or the last ?Does it ever bloom again in late summer or fall ?) How long have you had it ? (or, how long have you "known it to be grown" ? i.e. ,if you got it from your sister , who first had it in 1990.....that eliminates anything that came on the market SINCE 1990.
My first stop , when trying for an ID, is cruising a few vendors sites, and checking some of their photos, same for the searchable data base , here. Those are also good resources to learn what a "self" is, what a "plicata" is, so you can describe, in words, what you have. Then, you can say, I have an iris, 34"-36" tall, seems to bloom mid season, has dark green leaves, with no pbf. it's a yellow self, with a yellow beard, and it has to be older than 1998.
Identifying an iris can be an enjoyable....but sometimes very exasperating......trip to take ! But, even if you never "nail down" an ID, you'll learn a lot, and make quite a few "iris buddies" along the way !

Mary Ann pretty much gave you the scoop, Then the fun part starts, once you have a good guess, then you get to beg, borrow, or steal a rhizome of the known plant or plants, and plant it right next to the unknown one and hope that next year they both bloom at the same time, at the same height, and exactly the same colors appear. You get to dissect a bloom side by side to make sure it's the same in every detail, then you will maybe get an ID, if not, it's back to the drawing board. Don't be discouraged though, it can be fun to do detective work. Your bloom has some fairly unique features so it may not be too hard with that one. Good Luck!

Thank you all for the information here are more details the flowers on this plant are 29 inches tall they have been in my garden for 3 years in the previous Garden 14 years they bloom only once early no pbf. Nashville TN lots of frills so beautiful.there are maybe 12 different types in our gsrden to identify

The lighting in the photos makes it a little hard to tell the colors. If you can get photos in different lighting situations it helps. I did a search through that database and have a possible match for you...but you need to know there are something like 60,000 registered irises and the database is incomplete so there are lots out there that don't have photos for comparison. Based on what I was seeing I think your iris might be Chuckles. Our database photos vary a lot depending on lighting. I think you can get a better idea of what Chuckles looks like by following the link below.

I'm not sure about whether the beard color is right. It's very difficult to tell from the photos. But there are not too many of this type of iris (Plicata) with that combination of standard (the top 'petals') and fall (the lower 'petals') colors. The big indicator for me is the very prominent stripe down the center of the falls.

Remember, just because we have a potential match you need to do a lot more checking before you can be sure. Mary Ann, Arlyn, and Tom have given you a good description of the process in the posts above. Please don't expect that we will be able to identify all your Noid (No ID - or identification) irises. The ones with distinctive colors and patters are much easier than many others. I hope this helps!

I cross Posted with Liz. She has another very good possibility. I was searching Tall Bearded iris and Chickasaw Sue is a Border Bearded iris. Your iris is right in between the two classifications. The Colors on Chickasaw Sue look closer too. Great call Liz!
