I did not notice any fragrance. If your part of Maryland is close enough to southeaset Pennsylvania for a visit, I would encourage you to tour the Scott Arboretum, which is located on the Swarthmore College campus in Swarthmore, PA, a suburb on the west side of Philadelphia. Large collections of lilacs, tree peonies and magnolias are in bloom now. It is a beautiful campus, and visitors are free to wander around or take formal tours.

More photos of Halesia diptera eastern shore of Maryland. Every other year covered like this and off year blooms just not so loaded!
