While planting plants after I dug down about 6 inches I dug up a ball size substance which was white with the consistency of crus I shortening with a horrible rotten smell, any idea of what this is?

Welcome! Hello! I'm not familiar with "crus" - Is that a typo? I found a similar situation last spring; the mass was bright white and looked like marshmallow fluff but smelled awful. It was a rotted elephant ear tuber-the ones that look like brown softballs when you plant them. I scooped out the goo and left it alone. It grew a new plant just fine. I don't know if that's what you have or not. Any pictures?
