This plant has suddenly grown in my veggie and herb garden bed. It has dark reddish stems and opposite, serrated leaves. One expert guessed Jerusalem artichoke but another said not because the stems spring from a central location rather than separately out of the soil. Ideas? Thanks.

The leaves remind me of Rudbeckia. Maybe Rudbeckia fulgida. Could be Echinacea too. Welcome! to the NGA.

I agree that it looks like some sort of herb. Have you tried breaking a leaf off and smelling the plant?
