Hi All,

I'm new to this forum. I just bought a new house and this is our first spring here. This is also my very first garden so I really don't know what is a weed and what is something I should keep. I have gotten advice that in general if it grows fast it's probably a weed. With that in mind I've been letting these (image below) grow. There are a couple of patches of them always in areas of my yard that have a lot of sun. I'm in zone 7a in southern Maryland. Is this a weed? If not, what is it? Also, the rabbits and deer seem to love these so even if I leave them they aren't likely to stay long Smiling

Thank you in advance!

Welcome! Jenn,

How exiting to have your first garden! Smiling
The plant looks like a Rumex sp., maybe Rumex obtusifolius, but there might be many look-a-likes in your spot of the world..

Welcome! to NGA

My first thought is some kind of Burdock but the deer usually leave it alone unless they are really hungry. Dig one up and see if it has a big fat root on the bottom.

I thought of Curly Dock, but so far the leaves look too smooth. I think Myriam got it right.
