Thread OP

One of my favorite plants, a large Black prince echeveria, has scabby surface on edges of leaves (mostly on newer growth leaves around the center of rosette). I cannot figure out what is causing this in otherwise healthy plant. Some type of bug? I don't see any but perhaps they are too tiny. Any ideas on how to treat? Thanks in advance! This plant is one of my favorites & I would really like to restore it to its former self!

Welcome! I don't know what the problem is exactly but I saw something similar on my black Echeveria a couple of years ago and I attributed it to insufficient light (maybe the plant was weakened by that and made vulnerable to something else). Anyway, it was totally reversible with time after I moved the plant to a brighter location and some new leaves grew out. What is your growing situation there? How much light does the plant get?

Thank you for your ideas! I'm going to try putting it in a spot where it receives more light & see if that helps. Although it receives a large amount of light in the sunroom it's in, I realized after reading your reply that this particular plant faces away from the sun while the other two plants growing in the same pot face towards the sun and only have a tiny amount of "scabby" leaves compared with this plant. Thank You!

That sounds like a good fix. These are not great indoor plants if they don't get daily sun (reflected light is good but not a substitute). My plant is outside and gets maybe 6 hours of sun this time of year. The problem occurred during the winter when that area gets shaded by a wall, and that was the only time I really saw any green at the center. Here is what it looks like now... could use a scrub, we haven't had rain for a while. A couple of mealies need to be picked out of there, now that I look again. :)

I also need help! I'm just getting started with succulents. I bought a Black Prince a few weeks ago. Today, two healthy looking leaves just fell of with a very slight tap. Sad There are a few other leaves that also seem about to fall off. What's wrong with it??

I don't know but your plant needs more light. Does it get any sun?

It will get like an hour or two of direct sunlight but then the sun hides behind the building so it is mostly indirect sunlight.

The greenish yellow color at the center tells you the plant needs more light. If there's any other location with more sun, your plant may recover. Just be careful not to put it outside in full blazing sun without some gradual adjustment. When these plants enter crisis some weird things can happen, but I think your observation is telling you something about how you're growing the plant.

Echeverias have an interesting relationship with light. They tend to grow in the higher altitude parts of Mexico (among other places). Which means they like direct sun (indoor sun is not direct if it has passed through a window, as the UV is filtered out) and can tolerate a few hours a day, but only if the temperature does not get too high. My general preference in our mild climate is to provide half a day of sun to most, esp. the large ones. Filtered light is great too. They get shade in the late afternoon and change visibly in size and color when the wall to their side starts to shade them more in winter. Those changes are a good guide to understand their normal cycle, the variation they exhibit through the seasons.

This time of the year the less sun-hardy plants tend to start complaining about too much sun and I move them to a different location with about half the total hours. The reason I know they need protection is because I have killed them before by not providing it. Smiling

You've already gotten some good answers as to what to do to fix the plant now. I am just posting to say this: Put those couple of leaves that accidentally broke off into some friendly place to propagate!
