Hi, All!

I need some shade in my full sun garden. I don't want to pay retail. Wondering what fabrics anyone uses, or if you purchased shade sail canopy's, what fabric are they made of?

Thanks!

p.s. The many weeks of little to no sun, and now pre-mature summer sun/heat has even my full sun perennials gasping and peony lasting a day-ish. Rant-end.

Hi Ann.

From what I see on-line, the shade fabric varies from Cotton muslin to canvas and actual use of old sails. The cost is determined mainly by size and what material you use. You might consider looking at painter's dropcloths that can be found most places that carry paint supplies.

Depending on the area and the amount of shade desired, you can use the green shade cloth used in greenhouses.

You can buy different grades of shade cloth by the yard at greenhouse and farm supply sites. But, jmho you'll spend more trying to make your own than you would if you bought them. Once you get enough shade cloth, you also need webbing to stabilize the edges, and heavy-duty grommets or d-rings for the corners, plus a heavy-duty sewing machine to sew them together securely. I found a 16ft. triangular shade sail on Amazon just now for $29.99. An 8ft. X 12ft. rectangle was $33.

Btw, we are sailors and have many used sails over the years but I'd never use one as a shade sail. They don't let air pass through, and would make a terrible racked flapping in the wind. We donate our used sails to the local bird sanctuary where they use them to block the wind in winter and keep the birds warmer.

The first link in my post is for purchasing shade sails... when you click on it, there are prices starting under $30.
