Hi everyone...I was wondering what is the best orchid book out on the market now? I just want to get one to add to my library. I seen some on Amazon and all of them have mixed reviews. Any help would be great. Thank you Mike

I think you need to decide on a topic or if you are looking for a reference guide. My best reference books are Taylors Guide to Orchids and Botanica's Orchids.
For learning, Northers's Orchids as House plants is good. And for me Steven A. Frowine has a book I use called Fragrant Orchids. If you join the AOS, they have a Your First Orchid Booklet and then there is John Tullocks Growing Hardy Orchids

I know you're not in Florida, Mike, but the book I've learned the most from is Martin Motes' "Florida Orchid Growing, Month by Month". Except for your winters, which get colder than ours I think your climate is still pretty similar.

Most of the basic care information would apply to you up there in Georgia, too. His chapters on fertilization, diseases and treatments and bugs etc. are excellent.

Have you watched the video that's on the top of our Orchids forum menu? Great advice on watering that also applies to most places with high humidity, not just Florida.

There is no question in my mind that the most helpful and necessary book for an orchid grower is "Orchid Pests and Diseases" from the American Orchid Society. I have about worn mine out and need to buy another one.

Elaine..I am going to watch the video...the first chance I get and the Fla. Orchid Growing Month by Month...I had seen on Amazon and was thinking about it. Our weather is just about the same and our winters are a little colder than you guys. Plus we have to deal with freezing rain, sleet and some times snow....ugh!

One of my early Orchid books was and still is Home Growing Orchids by Rebecca Tyson Northen.
I had in my hand the other day, thinking of the way she lists the different types of Dendrobiums so Icould perhaps add that to the Names Game thread. It was too complex to add just like that, but I really wished one could just make a quick copy of those pages and post them. I guess, one has to read it it. Amazon sells some very cheap used copies of the book. It doesn't have the glossy picture look of more modern books, but it still contains a lot of useful information.

Thank you Ursula wi; check into that one also. When I first started I joined the AOS and received the magazine each month. Of course after I lost my first greenhouse I passed them on, should have kept them, great information. I need to re join is what I need to do...lol.

Hi Vanozzi...I will check on both of the books you mentioned. I collect books also. Subjects of course Orchids and the other is the Napoleonic Wars. I do the Napoleonic wars because I paint wargaming soldiers in 28mm size.
