We went to the Bay Area Carnivorous Plant Society Show last Sat, Jun 4, 2016 held at the Lake Garden Center in Oakland. A good chance to enjoy some cool temps too, as it was sizzling hot at our place, it is about 20 degrees cooler here at the coast. Free entrance, just the parking fee of $5.00

Lots and lots of carnivore eye candy!

Sharing some photos of these very lovely plants:

I like seeing how the carnivores are planted, in glass container, in a cork container, it cute ceramic containers, and the type of media they use:

Time to empty your pocketbooks at the selling floor, either thru the vendors or participate in the auction or buy raffle tickets to get a prized arrangement. I chose the auction, it was fun!!!

A closer look of the other plant I won at the auction: Nepenthes maxima x vent ( got to ask what vent means..ventricosa??) Quite vivid leopard like marks and reddish lips, and the pitchers are big too:

Jeff, I feed my single "pitcher" plant (Nepenthes) flies when I can get them with my flyswatter.

Hi Jeff, so far the Nepenthes grows nicely by my west side facing window indoors, as long as I keep it in some standing distilled water. But typically they say it is not needed, I guess it compensates for our very dry conditions. Since it is indoors, I occasionally feed it with errant spiders that gets indoors.

Try one, and observe how it goes, there are lowland and highland varieties and different hybrids, so I am still learning how it goes.

This is a nice page about lowland and highland Nepenthes: https://www.growcarnivorouspla...

Before ordering those seedlings, I looked at Nepenthes, Sarracenia, and Dionaea varieties. The Sarracenia and Dionaea appear to require bog-like and full-sun conditions. The Nepenthes just require pots, or perhaps even better, hanging baskets, and shade. I could meet the requirement of bog conditions and full sun for a handful of plants but not for 72 of them, so I ruled those two families out. Since I have already grown my single Nepenthes, and found that it was not nearly as "finicky" as I had read, that's what I went with. I chose the Nepenthes ventricosa because of its bright, apple-red pitchers.

Jeff, Tarev and I have vastly different growing conditions. Your conditions are like mine with the heat and humidity. Tarev has to deal with the heat but also a lack of humidity. I have never had my plant sitting in water and because of the media that I have it growing in, it surely does dry out between waterings. I would choose a lowlands varieties since those are closer to our conditions. When I up-pot my plant, I am switching to a mix of 1/2 long-fibered sphagnum moss and 1/2 coarse perlite. I think I will be able to maintain more constant moisture with that mix.
