Thread OP

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to mend a tomato plant that got hit with TWO hard rain storms which caused them to bend, but not break. Will binding the bent area with soft cloth and tape still produce a healthy plant?

This is what I have done; carefully put in a thin stake of some kind...bamboo, wooden dowel or maybe a small electric fence post...next to the plants. Then tie the plant to an upright position with some of that stretchy plastic plant tie up stuff. Or maybe thin strips of cloth. With support they should grow just fine.

Having done this several years, finally it sunk in to start the year with this support rather than wait for the wind to bend them over and then later give the tomatoes their support. As the plants grow up the stakes, they grow into the cages used for general and later support I make out of reinforced concrete wire into 2 foot diameter circular cages.

I completely agree with Paul, both that your plants will likely heal up if you kind of "splint" them at this point, and that using a stake for support, even when using cages, is very helpful. Smiling
