Show off your daylilies that have great substance here. I'll kickstart it with one of my own. The picture is from last year since I have only had one daylily bloom so far this season (and I've already over-shared pictures of its blooms). I give you Evening Enchantment:

Yours don't have to be velvety and they don't have to be large (or small)...just bring your pictures of thick-petaled daylilies!

I really got the idea for this thread after seeing a picture of the following daylily:

I don't like pastels much, but the thick petals of that one wouldn't be a bad thing to have around for hybridizing.

This is the one from my garden which has always amazed me because of how thick the petals are. It has the most substance of any of mine.It is not always a good blossom. It gets splotchy and sometimes does not open well. At one point, I dug most of it out and passed it on because of its' performance but I keep some just because of the substance of the petals. I have had this one for 10 years now--hard to believe.

Primal Scream
Thumb of 2016-06-09/Seedfork/c59330
Well this is the only bloom on Primal Scream I have seen this year, I was gone a month and it had one bud left when I returned. I found it laying of the ground and it was total mush and not fully developed. So I am hoping for some rebloom later. I do like flowers with a lot of substance, but I have also found that because the blooms are so stiff, if something brushes against them (like me) or if you try to open a not fully opened flower the petals tend to snap.
I am going into the garden this morning and specifically look for petals with substance and will post photos later.

@DogsNDaylilies I should be able to give you a piece of Primal Scream - I think I split off a couple of fans late last summer that I could pot up for you easily. I love it.

Laura, you are an amazing human being. Has anyone ever told you that? Lovey dubby I would love some, if it isn't too much trouble. Do I have anything you might want? (Lavender, other daylilies, seeds....?)

Capacity For Wonder--very thick substance, holds up well in our heat. The color is much deeper than the picture shows.

Just realized that I lost my post I thought I made earlier, so here goes again.
I did get out in the garden today and check blooms for great substance. I found some that were decent and some (a few that were excellent). I actually thought they would be more. Of course, this was based on the blooms this morning in the garden, so I could have missed some.
Bela Lugosi had decent substance I noticed.
Thumb of 2016-06-09/Seedfork/51e344
A close relative of Bela Lugosi, Nosferatu had great Substance, when I tried to open the bloom a little with my hand I actually cracked the petal as can be seen in the photo, the other small crack is a natural one in the front petal.

I have some seedlings which are showing really nice substance to them, but none were blooming today. However, this one is either a NOID, or possibly a seedling and I am leaning toward it being a seedling being the others have such good substance. Normally when I see the the texture shown on these blooms I assume a crepe like texture that does not hold up well in the rain, but these blooms are very sturdy and have excellent Substance with the ability to withstand a heavy downpour.

Scatterbrain was the only double that felt like it had really good substance, but only the sepals felt that way, the petals were fairly soft to the touch, but it is my favorite double in my garden at the moment.
My favorite Scatterbrain plant with a pinkish tone to it.

My other Scatterbrain plant without the pinkish tone.

I awarded the blue ribbon for the plant with the best substance in my garden this morning to....drum roll:
Jay Turman: A beautiful bloom, with great substance. At the moment for a variety of reasons this plant is right close to the top of my favorites ! Gypsy Rose Lee is neck and neck with it, but it did not have great substance.

If you want to know which cultivars have good substance, check them after a hard rain. Those that look unaffected have good substance. Not many will. If you want to see which have excellent substance, check them after having been open all day and THEN gone through rain. The blooms that still look fresh have excellent substance. Few, very few, but they are out there. One trait that is common to those cultivars with good substance is the stiff, waxy texture they carry..

My best by far is Yellowstone Canyon. It feels like it is carved out of wax, and still looks fantastic after triple digit temps at the end of the day. This is a stellar Daylily.

I think Welcome Mat would qualify. It is a shorter daylily, good for the front of other plants. It's a very pretty peach pink with a ruffled edge. This one holds up well for us. Actually, the color is our garden is more orange than my camera shows. Also, in this picture you can see the raindrops and the flower looks fine.

I have Primal Scream too. I like it allot. Most people don't like the oranges but I think they add substance to a flowerbed.
