Friday morning I got up and went outside to sit on the patio and drink my tea. The deer and groundhogs do not usually eat my hostas until Sept so I usually have a very pretty view. Well not that morning. The deer had visited early. I came inside feeling low and started out to the front. In the front shade garden was this little doe.

Thumb of 2016-06-13/Cinta/1ef769

No mommy in site. I asked "Where is your Mamma?" I know this doe did not eat my hostas down to sticks.

The next day the doe was still there and no mama in site. I started to try to decided what to do. I am torn. I cannot let a baby lie there and die looking at me with those sad doe eyes. But.......I feed it and it grows up and eat my plants. I went on the net did a search they say the deer will leave their doe in a safe place for 12 to 24 hrs and will return. If the doe has wet noes and clear eyes leave them alone. So the doe looked good and I left it alone.

24 hours later the mamma did return pushed the baby and the doe stood up and they left. I am so glad I did not have to intervene into nature. Hurray!

Oh Cinta, that's wonderful! I always worry about wild animals, even though I realize that they generally know what they're doing Rolling my eyes. So glad nothing happened to Mama and she came back to get her baby Thumbs up

That will be a great memory for a long time, Cinta!

Just to clarify -- your baby deer is a "fawn" -- the mama is the "doe." (And the dad is a "buck") Smiling

Hurray! Hurray! Cinta, I'm glad that you did have that experience with the fawn. But, I think that you're going to have to find a way to make that spot unpleasant/uncomfortable, so that they do not return to it on a regular basis. Maybe plants that they do not like, such as salvias and other fragrant/not so fragrant and fuzzy leaved plants. Otherwise, they may wreak havoc in your gardens. I'm trying to discourage some from regularly visiting my yard now. They were resting under an oak tree in my backyard. We still see hoof prints in that area.

What a sweet baby! My sister used to do wildlife rehab and worked with fawns. They were so cute! Although, anyone entering the pen had to keep their faces covered and wear dark glasses so the fawns wouldn't imprint.

You are right Sandy. I knew that but got stuck on those doe eyes that it was what I kept calling it.

Debbie you are so right. It was a hard decision that I was happy to NOT have to make. All I kept thinking if I go and buy this goat milk and this deer think this is its permanent home I was never going to have a garden again. I already have herds of deer in my yard sometime because of the orchard in the back so they know there is a lot of Hostas, daylilies, and apples. I think the mother had a good meal before she gave birth and that is what happened to the hostas in the back.

I do not know why where the baby was laying was thought to be a safe place. It was next to the driveway but there is a large patch of ditch lilies.

Oddly, my sister-in-law (who lives in Florida) had something similar happen about a week ago; she goes walking pretty early in the morning (while it's still reasonably cool) and there was a fawn curled up in the middle of their yard. Called the DNR (I think -- someone, anyway) and was told to leave it be, the mother would likely be back for it within 24 hours. The baby stayed there for quite a while and then, while they weren't looking, it was gone. Smiling

And a couple of weeks ago my husband was out golfing and there was a tiny fawn curled up right in the middle of a fairway Blinking . Hopefully that one also got back together with mom okay.

Sounds like not only humans no longer have good instincts it has moved into the animal world. I do not think motherly instincts would tell you dropping your baby in the middle of a fairway is safe. I look at how people are raising their kids and I do not think this world is going to last past the next 50 yrs.

I think it is awesome that your garden (in Mommy's eyes) was a safe place for her fawn. What a wonderful message from Nature!

Do, a deer, a female deer
Re, a drop of shining? sun,
Me, a name I call myself,
Fa, a long long way to run.
So, a needle pulling thread,
La, a note to follow So,
Ti, a drink with jam and bread,
That will bring us back to Do.
